Gangs of New York was not filmed in New York but rather in Italy where the film crew built a 1 square mile neighborhood to act as the 5 points. However in some scenes like the last one in the movie they added in some shots of New York. This was a technique where they tricked the viewer into thinking that it was filmed in New York when it was in fact filmed across the Atlantic. In addition the film crew added in some shots where there was snow on the ground to show New York’s harsh climate. Another thing the film crew did too sell the time period is the use of cameras; the crew used lower quality cameras so the film would not look as modern. (3). Gangs of New York used a lot of smoke in their scenes to illustrate New York at that time period. In the 1860’s there were constantly fires raging and smoke would fill the sky. The movie uses a lot of camera movement in battle scenes to show the chaos of a true battle. Gangs of New York also uses cinematographic techniques to enhance the characters’. The movie uses an extreme close-up on Bill Cutting to show his patriotism as his eye is shaped like an eagle. To make the viewer feel like they are in the scene the movie uses some shots were Bill Cuttings is talking to someone and the camera moves to make it seem as if he is talking to the viewer.
