A. Formal Organization. (Pg. 175) Secondary groups designed to achieve explicit objectives. These gangs are very intricate but also seem very disoriented. While a majority of the gangsters are low level runners, there’s more control as you go up the ranks. Someone could be a drug runner, then get promoted to maybe making the drugs instead. This formal type of organization is which enables this gang to function. Its not as much of a formal organization but it is essentially organized crime. While the group doesn’t necessarily have a final objective, it has many smaller objectives that it would like to take care of on a daily basis. One of these objectives would be to control turf. The MS13 controls turf by using force. Certain individuals within …show more content…
Effects of Group Size. (Pg. 160) There is strength in numbers. The MS13 are a huge gang, they control whole blocks and are what some people have to deal with all their lives. These kids that live around these gang areas are afraid to be on the streets. The only way they feel safe is if they are a part of one of these gangs. The gang considers themselves a family. While they bring fear to normal civilians, they also bring the respect and happiness of a family. This family idea is what makes so many kids want to join, and is why the gang keeps growing every single day. Another effect of group size is intimidation. If you were to see only gang member you would still be afraid to start problems with him, because you know he has a whole army of brothers behind him. If you’re just a kid on the street and all you see every day are MS13 gangsters and gang graffiti all over the walls, then you’re going to be curious about that life …show more content…
Social Networks. (Pg. 156) People who are linked to one another. These gangs reach out and recruit through social networking. They spray graffiti on walls to let people know that’s their turf. They can even recruit new members through websites like Facebook and twitter. Another way people can notice the gang is by looking at the tattoos they have. The easiest way for this gang to network in my opinion is just by tattoos and graffiti alone. The gang requires its members to have tattoos representing the gang. Today, the gang is huge. And it’s not just in LA, California. It’s all over the world, and all over America. Now if the gang is this big, and every member has tattoos representing the gang then it shouldn’t be hard for people to find the gang and possibly join. Another networking technique that is used is graffiti. Anytime this gang controls an area of town or a block in a neighborhood and it known as their turf. Gangs like to put graffiti up of their gang signs on the sides of buildings and walls to let everyone know that its their turf. Now if you were to just be driving down the road and see one of these signs you know you’re on that gang’s turf, and you could find someone to get you
