In today’s world most families are divorced, leaving broken families and broken homes. As family life worsens teens will start searching for other places to show them the same love that you would expect from a family. And what do they find? Gangs. Teens are looking for anything that simulates affection and the sense of belonging, which gangs provide. Pastor Jeremy Wallace explains it well by saying, “As the family unit disintegrates, gang involvement will increase.” Not surprisingly, 40% of U.S. gang members are under 18, in result of family issues.

We also found out that what magnetizes the youth towards the gangs is how much gangs resemble a family. Even though gangs can easily be a substitute family, there are also different ways to find acceptance, and a sense of belonging without turning to gangs. After-school activities such as sports teams and clubs can give the same discipline, while still giving that sense of belonging. Things like volunteering and church groups can too.
