Gang Violence Reduction Strategies

Chicago gangs has been around since early century, more and more small group of gangs in small number of neighborhoods has spark an increase of homicide in 2012. Since 1990s, crime and violence was primarily by large gang activities, however, much of the large group member has split forming smaller individual groups, resulting a continues disputes and gang battles. Both authors, Andrew Papachristo and David Kirk, studies how Chicago Police Department uses Violence Reduction Strategy (VRS) to decrease gang members in varies location in gun violence over a period of months.
Violence Reduction Strategy, a program where it uses social network analysis techniques to guide gang members to a straight pathway. The program is designed to offer help and legal risk to them in order to reduce populated gangs forming, resulting in reductions of gun battles. On the experimental analysis, there was a 23% reduction in shooting through violence’s, while another 32% reduction in gun violence among other group members. This study does show the program is effective, but regarding homicide rates is a factor of it. Other violence’s in elsewhere could not been affiliated by gangs, such as individuals fear of their own safety’s and unsafe neighborhoods. In one scenario, one activist that was mentioned in the article, says that gang leaders and its member should be responsible for their actions and that the police and government are not doing its job. Though the police department has a win situation in reduction of gang’s combats. Media, news, and self-individuals portrays a different story to the programs purpose of police working with gangs. This effect might cause others to carry on hand guns for their own protection. In most cases, those gun violence’s are parts of the homicide
