Gang Violence In The Outsiders

Improved Essays
In the book The Outsiders there is a lot of gang violence including street fights, robberies, and ganging up on one of the the opposing gang members. S.E. Hinton describes the Socs as the wealthier people that live in the better parts of town and the Greasers as the poor trashy part of town. Even though the Socs and Greasers aren’t that different, they still have war with each other for no apparent reason. Some people don't understand that Socs don’t act as the ideal Socs are, and some Greasers don’t act as the ideal Greaser. What sparked the big fight was when Johnny was defending himself and stabbed a Soc so Ponyboy didn’t get drowned by a few of them. But will the big fight even solve anything? If a side wins will it even stop the fighting …show more content…
The thing is, the Socs were on the Greasers part of town and they came to them and tried to drown Ponyboy. They told them to stop hanging out with their girls. Bob said “You could use a bath, greaser. And a good working over. And we’ve got all night to do it. Give the kid a bath, David”. Ponyboy tried to run but they caught him and Ponyboy couldn’t hold his breath for much longer. Johnny had two decisions, to let Ponyboy die, or to save Ponyboy by stopping the Socs from drowning him. I think Johnny made the right decision because yes violence is not the answer but would they really listen to him or would they just keep doing it? Also in the past they ganged up on Johnny and he got cut real bad and the Socs pretty much almost killed him. After they were done with Ponyboy I bet they would have beat up Johnny like last time he had got beaten up too. This ties in with my thesis because is it really worth to kill someone over talking to a girl that's a Soc? If people start violence, violence will spark after it aswell. Another example is when Johnny and Ponyboy had to run away to the country and to the church and they went to Dally for help. Dally gave them a gun to use. I feel like they didn’t know how to use it because Dally said “For Pete’s sake, Johnny, don’t point that thing at me”. I also feel like Dally is trying to help them but knows they won't use the gun. This wraps with my thesis because Ponyboy and Johnny both won’t use the gun because they don’t really support violence that much. I feel like Ponyboy and Johnny know that violence is not always the

“I didn’t mean to, but they were drownin’ you…” (74). If Johnny hadn’t killed Bob, the Soc’s would’ve killed Pony and quite possibly Johnny. As an act of self-defense, it wouldn’t count as an evil deed, it might count as a mistake instead. Although Johnny could’ve fixed the problem with less violence, he was worried for his friend, and that, in many cases, is honorable because they care for and protect their…

In The Outsiders, violence plays an enormous role as it affects how most of the characters, like Johnny and Ponyboy, interact with each other, and how several of them perceive violence differently. Violence is present from the beginning, when Ponyboy is walking down the street by himself and he gets jumped by a group of angry Socs. Ponyboys says in the first chapter, “Greasers can’t walk alone too much or they’ll get jumped,” [10, Hinton]. Greasers know that there is violence and they accept it.…
