Gang Rivalry In West Side Story

In West Side Story it depicts an intense gang rivalry. If I was to write a musical based on two antagonistic social or racial groups today, I would write about the classic “good girl” dates a “bad boy”. Staying with this idea you have Emily the daughter of a Chief of Police in Chicago; a well behaved girl, straight A’s student, and student body President. Dating Roberto the leader of one worse gangs ever in Chicago the Latin King. When the Chief of Police finds out about Roberto he goes to scare off, Roberto by saying if you ever go near Emily I will kill you. When Emily finds out what her father did. She goes to find Roberto only to find he boyfriend killed in a crossfire between police and his gang.
To heighten the tension in the story with
