A long-term consequence that this social problem has for the Robeson County population is that the rate for juveniles incarcerated goes up, which puts a bad look on Robeson County, North Carolina. Considering the fact that Robeson County is so poor, the violence and gang activity that is going on in the community only makes matters worse. A long-term consequence due to gang activity in the community is that people lose business. Many people are afraid to even start businesses in Robeson County due to the violence that is occurring in this population ( CITE). People move out of the community and the businesses start to lose customers, and then they lose money. Gang activity prevents individuals from being able to enjoy themselves when it comes to just strolling through the park, going outdoors to wash their car, and even shopping at certain places. Gang activity leads many people into trouble, which then leads those individuals into jail or prison. The number of people who are incarcerated in jail only destroys Robeson County even more. Another short-term consequence of gang activity that affects the population would be causing residents to move out of their neighborhood due to the fact that they are scared. According to Ohmer, Warner, and Beck (2010), “calling the police or social services may not be a viable response to problems in some neighborhoods” (p.165). Residents in the neighborhood may be scared to give information to or inform the police about the gang activity in their neighborhood due to the fact that one of the gang members will retaliate. Most individuals do not want to live in communities where there is gang activity happening. A short-term consequence can be a teenager falling victim to another gang member. There is a possible chance that another gang member from a different group may consider another teenager a rival considering the fact that they are in different gangs and do not represent the same thing. These consequences relating to gang activity and violence in communities tend to be short-term, but over time they turn into long-term consequences that can have major effects on that particular child who is considered a gang member, the community, and
