During the journey, Bilbo and the group have to face many creatures such as trolls, goblins, giant spiders, and at the end Smaug, a ruthless dragon. The purpose of the adventure is to go to Dale and reclaim the dwarves’ treasure from Smaug. Throughout the adventure, Bilbo unlocks many character traits that he thought he never had such as bravery, leadership, and cleverness. In chapter two of The Hobbit, “Roast Mutton,” Bilbo confronts a band of hungry trolls while attempting to steal one of their wallets, and the dwarves get captured coming in search of Bilbo.. Gandalf saves the group by striking a rock in half to allow light to shine on the trolls. This change is not effective because it shows that Gandalf is powerful and can defeat everything right away, even though in the book Tolkien wanted Gandalf to be not as powerful as the readers think. Also, Bilbo stalled the trolls which is supposed to be Gandalf’s role in the story, and it shows Bilbo already knows how to be clever, which defeats some of the purpose as Gandalf being
