“The only thing I ask from you is 'ganas' 'desire'. If you don't have the 'ganas', I will give it to you because I am an expert.” The quote is from movie “ stand and deliver” when the teacher Jaime Escalante encouraged his students not to give up studying Maths. This movie is based on the true story A maths teacher Jaime Escalante teached in Garfield public high school who use his passion and persistence to motivate a group of students who lack of resources and desire to study. Garfield is a public school where most students are from low-economic family, and they all have social or family problems. But, Mr. Escalante believed that he could change their lives and improve their academic levels. So, he set goal for these students which is to pass …show more content…
Escalante. He is a new Maths teacher in Garfield High school. And, He is a dedicated teacher who has desire and excellent teaching skills. Mr. Escalante teaches students to show their desire, “ganas” and do not extinguish their ganas. And, he desires to prepare his students who got low academic skills to pass Advanced Placement Test. At the beginning of movie, he knew that this student are shortage in studying Maths. He used easily-understood example to catch their attention. For example, when he teached them about percentage, he brought apple to the class and cut to pieces to introduce what is percentage. Also, he spent his weekends, breaktime and holiday to set up free class to help students catch up to the next semester Calculus class. The most important is that Mr. Escalante give them the most motivation than anyone, especially when the students almost break down by obstacles. For instance, Pancho who is a strong boy who is not confident to his study skills. When he want to give up to learning because his uncle offered him a good- pay job, the teacher stopped him. And, he drived with Pancho at night and let him pick the direction. But, they drive into a end road. Then, Mr. Escalante told him “ You only see the turn, you don't see the road ahead.” This sentence is to remind him that do not be shortsighted to give up your future because temporarily income. In addition, when all students first time pass the APT, testing service questioned them all cheating because they have the same errors in the test. He still completely trust his students would not cheat, and argue with testing service officer. Therefore, Mr. Escalante is the primary reason to make his students pass the test because he never give up these students, and just be surround to encourage, motivate, trust and take care of students, even the whole
