Combating Video Game Addiction Games are everywhere, on computers, tablets, and phones. Seventy-two percent of teens play video games(Lenhart). One out of ten teens are addicted to video games, playing about forty hours a week, compared to an average player of eight hours a week(Growing). Signs that teens are gaming addicts are increasing numbers of hours playing, telling lies in order to hide gaming problem, feeling more irritable when confronted, etc(Rauh). These addictions can lead to eating disorder, family issue, financial problems,etc(). Game addiction is a global problem because it has lead to death. When doing drugs such as cocaine or playing video games, increase of dopamine help people be able to ignore their problems. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that has multiple purpose but pleasurable reward is the cause for addiction(Willis). With increasing amounts of dopamine, the entire brain may experience pleasure leading to addiction(Willis). Compulsive gaming and abusing drugs result from cravings of dopamine. Many have depression but don’t seek professional help which makes people turn to something else to cope. Dr. Dhanapal Natarajan predicts that by the year 2020, depression will be the second leading cause of disease(). Many teens today have abundance of expectations from their parents to be good students, go to college, and get well paying jobs. When these teens can 't meet these expectations then they become depressed and to cope with it, they either abuse drugs or play video games. To help teens through these difficult times, cognitive behavioral therapy to treat depression or any other mental illnesses. Cognitive Behavioral therapy is a type of therapy that helps the patient to be more aware of their negative thinkings and be able to respond more to them more effectively(). The goal of CB therapy is to reduce gaming so that it won 't interfere with the player’s well being and life functions(). This is a great solution to help prevent and lower gaming addiction.
