The Gamemakers regularly create these as another form of extremely violent entertainment. These “mutts” can be any sort of species, shape, or size, and they can be spawned strategically or in random areas on the map for a surprise. Most of the time, they look similar to the original animal, but as Katniss says, “...these are the Hunger Games, and ordinary isn’t the norm.” (pg. 185). Muttations can catch tributes when they’re weak or near others to ensure a promising and, yes, entertaining, fight. The first instance of mutts we see are the tracker jackers in the tree when Katniss is above the Career pack. They look mostly like average wasps besides size, but they are extraordinarily lethal. According to Katniss, upon being stung, “Most people can’t tolerate more than a few stings. Some die at once. If you live, the hallucinations brought on by the venom have actually driven people to madness.” (pg. 185). When the tracker jacker nest was dropped on the careers, very strong tributes were killed and injured, possibly changing the outcome of the games, something that wouldn’t have happened if the nest were full of normal wasps. The other muttations we see are the wolf tribute hybrids at the end of the games. The Games had been egging on for weeks and have to come to a close, and it’s clear that the tributes won’t be finding each other on their own anytime soon. Without water, not even the strongest tribute can survive, so they must all come together, or die out. “‘The Lake,’ says Peeta, ‘That’s where they want us to go.’”The GAmemakers decided that the last battle will be at the Lake. They know the last battle has to be one that will be remembered.
