1.1 INTRODUCTION My Seminar Paper entitled ‘RAMAYANA- THE GAME CHANGERS’ is based on Kamban’s (sometimes pronounced as Kambar or Kamba) version of Ramayana which is translated and produced by one of the major stalwarts of modern Indian literature i.e. R.K. Narayan himself. His book entitled The Ramayana is a short version in the prose form of the epic and, serves as a base for my groundwork in this Seminar Paper. This paper would be divided into five chapters out of which the first, second and the third chapters are the core of this paper. Especially the third chapter as it deals with the roles of those characters apart from Rama, Lakshmana, Sita and Ravana, who were the ‘game changers’ as their role proved to be the turning points in the lives of the four main characters of the epic. The characters which can be termed as ‘game changers’ include Hanuman, Kaikeyi and Vibhishana. Apart from them the third chapter also includes a brief note on the seven cantos or ‘kaandas’. He was considered to be the court poet of a Chola emperor who granted him the title of ‘Kavi Chakravarty’ i.e. the emperor of the poets. He was a master of two languages which were Sanskrit and Tamil and he composed his version (not translation) of Valmiki’s Ramayana in Tamil language. It is said that Kamban spent every night studying the Sanskrit Ramayana, as composed by Valmiki, and with the help of some scholars grasped it and produced his version of eleven thousands version as compared to original twenty four thousands verses composition.
