I have resided here since the early 1800s. Each year I have the opportunity to see the seasons change and enjoy the beautiful scenery. However, the intensity of each season has had a harsh effect on me. The new railroad systems and water access made the area popular in the beginning.
I used to watch people enjoy the land. Most of them were wealthy and came from the cities. They loved playing cards in the new round building that was built shortly after the first fire. Because I was the tallest in the area, it was difficult for me to miss anything. One summer I had been watching a family that was staying here. They were clearly dysfunctional, despite the amount of money they were throwing around. The children were disobedient and the parents were often at each other’s throats. They had been here about a month, and then it happened. One day the family went out on the lake and never came back. Many of the rumors were obscene; however, I know what happened. The idea was strange at the time. Why would people struggle to climb a hill in deep snow, during the middle of the frigid winters, just to travel back down and climb up it again? The concept originated here. The action became a sport and has now become quite popular. I suppose that is a good pastime to get through the depressed cold months. Eventually someone put their thoughts into action and created a system so that people wouldn’t have to take their skis off and trudge up the hill any longer. Instead they grabbed a hold of the cable and used their skis to ride back to the

Constructing Place Distinction In what follows I document permanent residents’ and second homeowners’ parallel construction of place distinction. Both groups tend to agree on what lends meaning to Rangeley; both call upon the rural idyll—that rural life is simple, virtuous, and different from urban life—to explain what makes Rangeley distinct (Woods, 2011). Both groups celebrate…
