In the movie, Rounders the main character is Mike McDermott. Mike is a student in law school and has a girlfriend named Jo. Also, there is Worm who has been Mike has been friends with since they went to school together when they were younger. Worm has just gotten out of prison and is ready to get back into his old habits of gambling. Worm also did a lot of gambling while in jail with the other inmates and prison guards. Since Worm has been locked up Mike has quit the game of cards and is now driving a delivery truck to make money to pay for law school. This is because in one game Mike lost 30 thousand dollars to a member of the KGB. Since then he has retired from the game and no longer gambles. We truly see this when Jo asked where and what he had been doing all night because he never came home to their apartment. His response to her was that he was entertain worm the whole night when he was out gambling with worm the whole night (Rounders, 33:49-35:10).
Mike shows that he is jeopardizing or losing both a significant relationship or career/job opportunity. He loses jo because he lied to her about starting to gamble again (Rounders, 52:30). He also though lost a great opportunity in the case he’s doing and lost the head position because he was too busy with gambling and was not prepared for the day they presented in court (Rounders, 1:00:00-1:03:00).
Mike shows relying on others to provide money to relieve debt when he asks the judge for money (Rounders, 1:35:50-1:37:40). Now this one can be a little tricky. Although it is Worms debt Mike is brought into paying it because he vouched for worm and went to the loan shark with worm telling him they needed an extension to pay off the debt (Rounders, 1:12:10-1:13:30). Even though it is not his actual debt he still has to pay it because of those
