VALOR
On December 24, 2010, I arrived at my grandmother’s house and noticed many of my family members were there. Before I got to the door my father told me that my grandmother had passed away and that the battle she was having with cancer was over. I had not realized how valiant my grandmother was during her treatments for her illness. I look back on that tragedy and wonder if I have as much VALOR as she did. “VALOR lies halfway between rashness and cowardice” (Miguel de Cervantes). What makes VALOR an important virtue to have? This quote means that when a person faces a challenge or battle; that is when courage is needed to deal with those situations. With each experience a person may have, VALOR may be needed to move forward from those experiences. One might think of VALOR as a characteristic that is needed for everyday life. The King James Bible states: “And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him, and said unto him, The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valor” (Judges 6:12). The angel is saying that the man already has VALOR within him but God will give him the extra strength needed to help him with any situation. One could need someone to help him understand that VALOR is already inside him. Many people rely on a faith or religion to bring out the strength and VALOR within them. Frist is saying that the soldiers’ ability to deal with the amount of stress and fear that comes from battle takes a great deal of VALOR. The soldiers’ families also have a great amount of VALOR to stay strong even though their family members could die at any time. The struggles that people face in everyday life needs that same VALOR. The Marine Corps War Memorial is a sculpture of U.S soldiers raising the American flag at Iwo Jima (Washington D.C.). This memorial shows the struggle that American soldiers had to go through during the battle and how much VALOR they needed to make it through until the end. They needed a great amount of VALOR to face an enemy that would not hesitate to harm them. The soldiers persevered through the battle even though they lost many comrades during the battle. This battle is a testament to the amount of VALOR, courage, and strength that each soldier
