One of the most important ways to measure one’s success is the happiness he or she experiences in day to day life. To survive, especially in the United States, it is essential to have a job. That chosen job should bring someone joy, and he or she should be passionate about it so that the best quality of life will be achieved. It requires self-reflection to figure out what the best job is for a person. An efficient tool for making this decision is Gallup’s StrengthFinder. It is a series of questions that determines the top five strengths out of 34 that a person possesses. Knowing other strengths and weaknesses are also beneficial. According to the book, art director work with graphic designers and production artists to “determine how the ad’s verbal and visual symbols will fit together” (Arens et al, 74). In respect to advertising, their primary task is to correctly convey what the client(s) requests, which will bring them the most customers and profit, while maintaining a good brand image for said client. Art directors are the people who choose where the “free” in all caps goes on the coupon slip at the grocery store or the way that the letters for the “BOGO” sale are arranged. The art director position does not necessarily require an art background because it usually is done with the assistance of a graphic designer or photographer, but It is encouraged to have some familiarity with the art process. Also, since the director is in the title, it is safe to say that there is some leadership aspect to this position. Additionally, there are many facets and media for this job; art directors use all forms of visual ads, printed and digital. As of now, I would like to be an art director. I do not want to work for a large agency, but a single person or a small firm with a handful of people.
