In the short story, "A Little Cloud” by James Joyce, she uses the character foil technique. Fearless Gallaher acts as a character foil for Little Chandler in the story. Meaning, Gallaher’s traits and beliefs are almost the complete opposite of little Chandler’s, yet Gallaher is living the life Chandler dreams of having. We see this through the author's use of physical traits, character traits, and the characters values and beliefs.
The author creates a very real image of both Gallaher and Chandler, and we see that the two are very different from each other physically. Gallaher is a bigger man with very bold attributes outlining him, while Little Chandler “was but slightly under the average …show more content…
Little Chandler is portrayed as weak and feeble, “He chose the darkest and narrowest streets, and he walked boldly forward, the silence that was spread about his footsteps troubled him, the wandering, silent figures troubled him; at times a sound of low fugitive laughter made him tremble like a leaf.”(pg. 81). This shows that he is always avoiding people by doing this. He is scared of everything even with his own actions. Gallaher is portrayed as a very loud person, with a bold attitude, and a person who is always looking for excitement. “There was something vulgar in his friend which he had not observed before. But perhaps it was only the result of living in London amid the bustle and competition of the press. The old personal charm was still there under his new gaudy manner. And, after all, Gallaher had lived, he had seen the world. Little Chandler looked at his friend enviously.” (pg.4). Little Chandler is also very envious, “he was sure that he could do something better than his friend had ever done or could ever do something higher than mere tawdry journalism if he only got the chance. What was it that stood in his way, his unfortunate timidity.” This shows Chandler’s jealousy and envy towards Gallaher’s lifestyle. Gallaher is the complete opposite of envious, he is a very honest and outgoing man which got him to the fame and fortune he has acquired. This contrasts the two
