Gallagher Family Stereotypes

Whoever thought that a television show, about six dirty kids in the slums of Chicago, living with a drunk father would make me a better person. First off, I did not live in the slums of a major city. I lived in a nice town, with a lot of nice people. I also did not have an alcoholic for a father, so me connecting to the show did not seem likely. That is until, I got a closer look into the problems and flaws of all the Gallagher children. They made me happy, they made me cry, they made me laugh until my stomach hurt, they made me bubble over with anger, they made me think and reflect, and lastly they showed me to love myself no matter what. That is why I fell in love with a show called “Shameless.” There are six children in the Gallagher family …show more content…
He has incredible work ethic and will not stop until he gets what he wants. Ian, as we find out through Lip is gay. He has felt that way all his life, and even though the Gallagher’s accept it doesn’t mean the neighborhood does. Ian is head over heels for Mickey Milkovich, the roughest, toughest, dirtiest kid on the southside of Chicago. Ian does know that Mickey is gay, but that is not accepted in his family. Up until season four, we see Ian pushing Mickey into coming out to his family. Finally, when Mickey comes out we see a different side of Mickey. He is softer, more gentle, and will take care of Ian at all costs. Ian brings out the best in people, and will stop at no costs to do things for love. The next Gallagher, is a very special child. Carl Gallagher, is a troublemaker since his first scene in the pilot until we see him get shipped off to juvie. He is the only Gallagher that doesn’t have a inner demon he is fighting he just makes stupid mistakes. Lastly, there is Debbie Gallagher and she has changed dramatically. I used to see myself in Debbie, the innocent child, she did no wrong, and was very smart, almost as smart as Lip. That is up until she discovers the world of boys, and sees how cruel girls can be. She gets into fights, and by the end of season five she is

At the beginning of last semester, I started watching Shameless. Shameless, created by Paul Abbott and developed by John Wells, stars William Macy and Emmy Rossum. The series is successfully able to interpolate its audience and is successfully able to relate to people. The series focuses on many issues within the Gallagher family and messages can easily be perceived through interpolation, cultural analysis, queer analysis, rhetoric and Stuart Hall’s Encoding and Decoding essay. The “Just as the Pilgrims Intended” episode brings out a lot of these theories.…

Jersey Shore is an American reality television series which originally run on MTV from December 3, 2009 until December 20, 2012 in the United States. The show follows the lives of eight housemates spending their summer at Jersey Shore, New Jersey. The morality of this show can be questioned since members usually behave like reckless teenagers. Certainly there is not underage drinking, but we have to question ourselves why is this behavior shown on air as normal and acceptable. Moreover, reality-show culture has boomed nowadays, rushing the degeneration and helping to create a society in which celebrities (known thanks to technology) are the new nobility.…

For my reaction paper, I watched the movie “UP”. The film featured an older gentleman as the protagonist of the story. Watching the film from a social work perspective I was conscious of the stereotypes and issues reflecting older adults. My initial reaction to the film was that I was stunned at the amount of stereotypes the movie portrayed. The most noticeable was the personality of the main protagonist.…

Ian Gallagher is a fictitious television character from the show Shameless. The show is set in the South Side of Chicago and focuses around a dysfunctional family of six children who raise themselves with the occasional appearance of a drunk father and bipolar mother. Ian, born in 1996, is the third eldest of the children. He began developing symptoms of bipolar disorder, mania and depression, in his late teens and into his early twenties. His siblings noticed his symptoms almost immediately, identifying them to be parallel to the symptoms their mother, Monica, had experienced years before when she was first diagnosed.…

McCandless didn’t conform particularly well to the bush-casualty stereotype. Although he was rash, untutored in the ways of the backcountry, and incautious to the point of foolhardiness, he wasn’t, incompetent- he wouldn’t have lasted 113 days if he were. And he wasn’t a nutcase, he wasn’t a sociopath, he wasn’t an outcast. McCandless was something else- although precisely what is hard to say. A pilgrim, perhaps (85).…

Folklore are beliefs and ideas that are constantly changing throughout television or any source of media because Shameless was created by Paul Abbott, it is a comedy-drama remake based on the British series. The show centers on a dysfunctional family which consists of six siblings of Chicago, Illinois who struggle with their alcoholic father and estranged mother. Although many reality television shows exist to follow standard entertainment, Shameless can be argued as a modern folklore. The show, Shameless, is able to operate as folklore by qualities and characteristics presented in the show as the trickster, folk groups, motifs, and social context, but the main characters are archetypes of traditional hero which supports less validity of a…

Dawson’s Creek is an American television series that first began in 1998, created by Kevin Williamson who loosely based the show off of different aspect of his own life. The show follows Dawson, the main character, who is an aspiring film maker, his close friends Joey, Pacey and Jen, as well as the additional friends that come and go along the way. It depicts the four friends, living in a small coastal town, as they help each other cope with the struggles of both adolescence and growing up. The group endures a series of struggles that comes with life, as they mature and develop. The TV series Shameless is based on working class family that lives on the South Side of Chicago. The show is based off the dramatic and chaotic life of the Gallagher family. The family of six children depend on the oldest sister, Fiona, to take care of the family due to the absence of the mother and their incapable alcoholic father who comes and goes as he pleases. The unstable family has to cope with the struggles faced with little money and learn how to take care of themselves and also each other. In this paper, I claim that the show Shameless represents the stereotypical ideas of the poor class through the main character Frank Gallagher, for he is portrayed as a lazy, alcoholic father involved with criminal activities.…
