Gala Dali Museum

For my first museum visit I went to the Dali museum in St. Petersburg on the 26th of March. The visit as a whole was fascinating and I got to see several paintings that were intriguing. For this assignment, however, I am going to talk about one piece in particular and that is Galacidalacidesoxiribunucleicacid. This piece stood out to me for a couple different reasons. First, was obviously the name. It appears to be a blend of Gala Dali, his crush over whom he obsessed, and deoxyribonucleic acid. Besides this, the entire scene stood out. The painting has a gloomy feel to it and the clouds on the top of the photo are a stormy grey. The clouds then appear to coalesce into the landscape, which looks like it is flooding. For example, God appears to be holding a scroll. This has spirals on it in the same manner as DNA highlighting (if you are religious) his control over life. Also very faintly in this photo is what appears to be Jesus. He is falling alongside Mary and his head and arm are barely visible. It almost appears as if God is reaching down in this photo in order to pull his son back up into heaven. This most likely symbolizes Jesus’s death by crucifixion and his subsequent rebirth thus demonstrating the cyclical theme Dali was trying to portray. Another aspect that portray hidden meaning is the rifle men. They are standing in cubes with their guns aimed at one another. These cubes seem to appear elemental. In theory if all of the riflemen fired in succession then they would self-destruct themselves. In this sense, they can represent the death aspect of the cycle. What is perplexing to me about this painting in the landscape. I wonder where it is located and what the meaning is. If I could ask the artist this I most surely would. Unfortunately since Salvador Dali is no longer alive I had to ask google. The setting of this then is 1963 Barcelona where there was a deadly flash flood. The painting then serves to offer hope for all those affected by the flood by highlighting the cycle of life, death, and rebirth to the

When The painting American Gothic was painted by Grant Wood in 1930, it had become an instant classic. Most people had seen this painting as something that was considered satirical. However his goal for this painting was to show the good values that Midwest America held during the time of the great depression. I will begin to criticizing this work of art by describing what I see in the painting itself. I will then move on into how I interpret this particular painting, and finally I will then give you my evaluative prescription of this painting.…

There is a feeling of connection between the three of them by the way they are all looking at each other and the cross. Although I could find no documentation on this, I feel there is also a symbol of the trinity in the three flowers to Mary's left side. The flowers are very prevalent and are connected to the figures in the painting by having the same color that is in the Virgin's shirt. It is also speculated that the water in the background symbolizes the baptism of Christ by John the Baptist. The fact that Mary is barefoot in the painting indicates that she is walking on holy ground.…

Dali painted this piece in the year 1940 when he lived in California after fleeing his home country of Spain. Dali had to flee Spain because of the violent civil war that began in 1936 and lasted until 1938. Dali most likely painted The Face of War as a reaction to the recent civil war in his native country of Spain. He used this painting as a way to convey to the world the ugliness of war and to express his feelings the way he knew best. In fact, it is very likely that in addition to painting this piece as a reaction to the Spanish Civil War Dali might have also painted this in protest to the just begun World War II, which lasted from 1939 to 1945.…

The incredible details and use of the elements of art allow the viewer to see this miraculous event as if it were happening before their very eyes. This painting allows the viewer to take in the event slowly, and really appreciate it. It also includes a lot of symbolism. For example, Christ’s posture, and gesture emphasizes the love, and sincerity He had toward his fellowmen. The whiteness of his robe is an indication of his purity and nobility.…

Many may think that due to the name of the painting it maybe something that promotes religion, but I personally thinks the painting promotes diversity. It shows a big city with so much going on , which shows chaos. The artist was creative with the colors he chose to use. He used bright colors opposed to using dark…

Dali uses scale change on the figurines to create a sense of depth on a flat canvas. Just below the type you can see more statues or people that are lined up, and rotating as they move left to right similar to how the large figurines do. Towards the top of the painting in the back there are statues that start off bigger on the sides, and then get bigger smaller as they go back. In the bottom right part of the painting there are colorful dots that look to be flies, or maybe even birds, but they can best be described as Non-Objective…

Obviously since it’s a painting it has visual elements but Dali has incorporated certain visual techniques specifically to juxtapose the nature of the conscious mind to that of the unconscious state. The various melting and drooping clocks, being an oddity, draw the audience’s attention and signify the absence of time in a dream state as the distorted clocks all point at different times suggesting that time is not functioning as it does in the real world. Dali has painted the distorted clocks and the sleeping figure both on the foreground where it is dark, implying unconsciousness and drift from reality as the table and the figure are heavily contrasted from the pitch black ground also conveying that they do not exist in the dream world but only in the ‘real world’. But where exactly is the ‘real world’ here? Well the bright background with the landscape is where reality exists and its harshness is conveyed with the sharp, rocky cliffs.…

The action takes place outside the city in front of a large boulder, and there is a church seen in the distance. The mood of the painting is very bleak and dull. The colors used are in earthly tones, and there is a strong overall contrast of dark and light. This dramatic lighting technique can be seen in the central figure. His outstretched arms form a V line.…

Figge Art Museum Who would have thought that I, who had neither exposure to nor much interest in art, would have been so captivated by what I experienced during my visit to the Figge Museum. I grew up in Davenport and currently live outside the Quad Cities area and yet I was unaware of the impressive art museum that is in Davenport. I was excited to visit this museum and to see what I had been missing out on all of my life. When I approached the building, its contemporary architectural design was very intriguing to me. I liked the way its overall shape was asymmetrical in that the top two floors are placed off center on top of the lower two floors.…

The men who once mocked Christ of his sacrifice, suffered a painful and horrific death themselves. Resurrection is supposed to be universal, so every single person must face their “Last Judgement” with Christ, which is why the painting shows so much movement and activity between the people. This painting depicts all of mankind’s redemption period, and has universal appeal among the people and the world fills with hope to be redeemed by Christ. Throughout the painting, spectators can see that the people within the painting are holding on to one another either for comfort and support or out of anger trying to push the others away in order to get redemption from Christ. When looking at Christ in the painting, one can see that his two hands are facing two different directions, his right hand is facing up, as in a way pushing the people towards the top to Heaven, and his left hand is facing down pushing the people…

The painting I chose was Frank Stella’s “Flin Flon VIII”. It is an acrylic piece on canvas characterized by a mixture of curving and straight lines that interlock, vibrant colors, and an emphasis on the circle in the middle of the canvas. A huge quantity of negative space is present in the painting and the painting emits a smooth texture. The painting is one hundred and eight inches squared, making it one of the largest paintings in the San Diego Art Museum. Its size projects itself on the viewer overwhelming them with its color and size.…

    The Scream Poem Analysis

“The Scream” I really like this painting because somehow it involves mystery and insecurity and to my eyes, the rare views in it reflect a sense of how deep the feelings and thoughts of a person can be. In addition, the fact that the composition does not allow viewers to appreciate the face of the screaming person, is what has drawn me to it. Even though it seems to be that it was a lovely afternoon for everyone, it seems that it was not for the scared looking person. Although two boats are seen on the lake and two people walking very pleasingly behind, the scared looking person seems to be astonished and perhaps confused toward something. Hence, looking at this mysterious individual posing his hands on his face with his mouth open has given me the impression that he or she is appreciating something non real that no one else is able to notice; no one but him.…
