Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (Caligula) was one of the many emperors of Ancient Rome. He was born on 31 August AD 12 in Antium, Italy and died on 24 January AD 41, at age 28 at Palatine Hill, Rome. Sadly his reign only lasted 4 years due to the fact that he was assassinated. In those small four years, he made great changes to Rome.

Caligula was born on 31 August AD 12 in Antium, Italy and was one of the 6 surviving children of Germanicus and Agrippina the Elder. When he was little he would accompany his father on trips to Germania, dressed in a soldier's outfit giving him the nickname Caligula. Sources say that Caligula had Tiberius's will nullified in regard to Tiberius Gemellus, but otherwise, it was left the same. When Caligula accepted the title of principate and entered Rome the crowd called him names such as “our star” and “our baby”. He is described as one of the most admired and loved by the citizens of Rome as he was the son of the beloved Germanicus and also because of the fact that he was not Tiberius. His first acts as emperor of Rome were said to be generous and kind, for instance, he proclaimed that treason trials would be no more and that anyone who had been banished was allowed to return to Rome, but after becoming extremely ill his attitude completely changed. After recovering from his illness he became a dreadful king. He had his cousin Tiberius Gemellus killed, along with his father-in-law and brother-in-law executed. Sadly his favorite sister Julia Drusilla died of a fever in 38 AD, and he banished his other two sisters Livilla and Agrippina the Younger. In AD 39, a financial crisis materialized according to Greek historian Cassius Dio. This is said to be because of Caligula’s generosity, political payments, and extravagance that caused the state treasury to dry up.
