It is becoming more and more common for people to obtain college degrees, however some believe that too many students are being sent to four-year universities. People argue against by claiming, “The job market is much tougher for people without higher education. The unemployment rate last month was 5.8 percent for people with only a high school diploma, compared with 4.5 percent for those with some college and 2.5 percent for those with a bachelor's degree or higher, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.” (Alexia). This is true, however there are technical skill jobs with openings that people with college degrees do not have the desire to fill. Many students are entering college right after high school with the mindset that he or she will be a doctor or a lawyer or another occupation that requires much education, leaving jobs in production and other technical realms searching for workers. In fact, it is stated, “The spread of wealth at the top of American society has created an explosive increase in the demand for craftsmen,” (Murray 677). In addition to this, it is also stated “But as the labor market tightens, ‘there's less of an advantage for people with a college degree,’ says Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research,” (Davidson). Because, more people are getting higher degrees this causes a great competition between highly educated to obtain the best jobs. In this sense, those who are not as highly educated have an advantage in that there are more job opportunities. Many students are interested in making the most money possible , and are therefore fighting to have the highest paying jobs. With so many fighting for these high paying jobs, normal positions which are normally filled with employees with a degree are going to those with no college
