Gaby Rodriguez Chapter Summary

This book is based on the true story of Gaby Rodriguez, a high school student who faked her own pregnancy as a social experiment for her senior project, required for graduation at her high school. Her project went viral and she became world famous for her thought provoking project. She was the center of media attention and fame even being featured on shows like Good Morning America and The Today Show. Gaby’s mother had to face many trials in her life; she got pregnant for the first time at the age of fourteen, she was in the eighth grade. After her first child she had seven more totaling into eight children. Gaby’s mother married the father of her first seven children. He was extremely controlling over her. He wanted her to cook and clean and take care of the children while he worked. The couple had many physically violent fights. Despite the abuse from her husband, Gaby’s mother stayed with him for sixteen years. She didn’t know anything else at that point, this was the only relationship she had ever been in. Gaby’s father was a Mexican man whom her mother met at a dance. When Gaby’s mother found out she was pregnant he had already broken up with her. Gaby’s father was in and out of her life from the beginning. She would go months even years at times, without hearing from him. Over time even more of Gaby’s siblings became teenage parents. It was an epidemic in their family. This was hard for Gaby to live with especially when they would place so much responsibility on her from a very young age.
