Around the time of his publishing of “The Blessed Damozel,” Dante began translating the works of Dante Alighieri. Consequently, he adopted the dark characteristics of Alighieri and other early Italian writers and artists(“Dante,” 2017). Furthermore, Dante carried that style to his paintings, however, due to the public's disdain for symbolism and mythological art Rossetti’s paintings drew heavy criticism(“Dante,” 2017).
