He came over to the country by sailing on a boat. He wanted to go to the city of Baltimore because he wanted to join the Sulpician community. He was very familiar with the Sulpician community because he attended this seminary when he was in France. Where he would serve as Michigan’s first vice president and soon after he would be appointed to the Board of Trustees. In the year of 1823 he represented Michigan in Congress, this made him become the first Catholic priest to hold office in this country. One of the main things he did while he was in office was structuring the funding that would build a road from Detroit to Chicago.
He died in the year of 1832 by the cholera epidemic. He got this by ministering to the sick people in Detroit. The cholera epidemic killed many poor people in the city of Detroit. This epidemic killed almost 10 percent of Detroit’s inhabitants and would decimate the region. He died September 13, 1832 at the age of 65. Today he is buried in St. Anne’s Church.
Gabriel Richards Legacy is still around today there are four schools in Michigan named after him. There is a State of Michigan Historical Marker, which commemorates Fr. Richard.
