Gabriel Garcia Marquez: Colombia’s Most Influential Political Figure
Children growing up in an environment where story time and imagination are key roles plays a major part in their childhood up until their adulthood. Marquez’s childhood was impacted by his grandfather’s stories about war and his grandmother and aunt’s tales of gypsies and myths. Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s unique style of writing, Magical Realism, is a mix of imagination and reality that was molded by his unconventional upbringing. His One Hundred Years of Solitude was influenced by his childhood that exposed him to the real world, yet allowed him to remain a naive child.

Not only is he a devout novelist, journalist, and writer, he also finds contentment in sharing his wealth with various organizations to bring peace to all of South America (Echevarria; Lovelady).
Gabriel Garcia Marquez travelled from city to city seeking jobs as a journalist for various newspapers, he landed in Venezuela and met his later to be wife, Mercedes Barcha. They got married on March 27, 1958 and by 1962 they had both of their two sons, Rodrigo and Gonzalo (Estorino). In 1999, Gabriel was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer and was undergoing treatment when his death was incorrectly, prematurely reported and announced in a Peruvian Newspaper in 2000 (Fulton 4; Gabriel Garcia Marquez Famous Authors). He was officially announced dead on April 17, 2014 in Mexico City, Mexico at the age of 87 from pneumonia (Echevarria).
Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s works are memorable and his legacy in both Colombia and around the world will never be forgotten. All of his experiences in life molded him to be the person that he eventually became, although his unconventional childhood affected most predominantly.
