In “The Dead,” Gabriel Conroy’s controlled actions and his status with his aunts as the nephew who is an upkeeper of everything spot him as a man of authority and attentiveness, but different encounters with two women at the party test his self-confidence. First, Gabriel awkwardly brings forth a defensive report from the overworked Lily when he questions her about her relationship life. Instead of asking for forgiveness or clearing up what he meant, Gabriel quickly ends the discussion by handing lily a tip for the holidays. He faults his significant education for his incapability to relate to servants like Lily, but his preparedness to let money speak for him proposes that he relies on his class and title and money to uphold distance between …show more content…
Gabriel remembers the close moments of their dating life, and the spark of romance ignited in him ,by Gretta, begins to blaze. He later on takes Gretta to a hotel, he felt that they had escaped from their lives and obligations, escaped from home and family and went to a new world with a fresh beginning, and fresh love and radiant heart that would take them to a new journey. The problem is that Gabriel does not recognize his wife is having emotional breakdowns. When she heard “The Lass of Aughrim” it reminded her of a boy she had known and loved in Galway, Michael Furey, who, at the age of seventeen, perished of a broken heart when Gretta left Galway to come to Dublin. Finding about the death of Michael Furey makes Gabriel reevaluate his love relationship with his wife, Gretta. His own insignificant vanity, and his self-image is what caused them to grow distant. The outcome is frustration and disappointment. Gabriel desires to become a writer, but he is unsuccessful of knowing and understanding the person with whom he is most intimate, his wife. This is the
