I have always wanted to learn for the sake of knowing and loved sharing that knowledge. Understanding the “why” of things was not always celebrated as I was growing up in Mississippi in the 1970s. Not all the benefits of the Civil Rights movement had made it to my small town. We were encouraged not to question but to do without drawing attention to ourselves. I wanted something different. There was some placed out there that would help me answer the “whys” and “what ifs”. I wanted to go and do all those places I read about. I wanted to know pull things apart to see if they could fit back together differently. I helped my dad change the oil in his car because I wanted to how it ran. I took typing instead of home economics in middle school because I knew to operate a computer, I would have to type and computers where changing the world. Every year I would pick a different scientific field as a goal only to be told that “it was not for people like me”. GWU ETL program will provide me with the opportunities to learn the tools to help develop challenging and engaging curriculum using the digital landscape. Additionally, GWU ETL use of applied research will provide me the opportunity to have a hands on learning building these tools. I am eager to learn from Dr. Natalie B. Milman about her work on digital portfolios. As a home educator one of the frustrating challenges we face, is finding an accurate way to capture a student’s unique and varied educational work. Transcripts alone do not provide the complete picture. The Developing Digital Professional Portfolios course will help me gain a working knowledge of the industry’s latest technology and theories.
