Dessie M. Sanders, is the next President of Grambling State University. She genuinely exemplifies the leadership that this university truly needs. I came to know Ms. Sanders when she came from Grambling and was hired two weeks into the fall semester at Wiley College two weeks, as an English Instructor. Her direct ability in demonstrating, in-depth knowledge of research, Common Core State Standards (CCSS), comprehensive assessment systems, and practice in curriculum, instruction, and assessment is what we needed in Developmental Reading and Writing, AVID and Educational Leadership under the Division of Social Sciences and Humanities. I am interested in going to Badger Girls State because this would be an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity and a privilege for me. My ancestors have always been involved in politics, from signing the Mayflower Compact, being written about in George Washington’s letters, fighting for women’s suffrage, and even now, voting, and voicing their opinions in the elections. I not only grew up learning about politics, but want to pursue a career as a political science teacher. I don’t believe my generation fully understands politics and how important it is for them to vote and get involved in politics. I want to change this in my own classroom.…

If you had asked any of my peers for a description of who I am, they would have said that I was someone who was shy, and possibly even a bit awkward. This was a personality trait that I had been struggling with throughout the majority of my life. I had grown up as an only child, incessantly feeling out of place among my peers. It wasn’t until the middle of my freshman year of high school that I gained the self-confidence I had only dreamed about.…

Why do I, Nadia Thomas, wish to be your SGA president? Honestly, because I want to make a change and leave a heavy impact on South Atlanta. When I was growing up, I was overly excited to go with my siblings to the local high school because no matter what time of day the student body was always excited and filled with adrenaline when it came to school spirit and education. Literally there was no mourning or moping kid in sight and the teachers had the spirit too. So when I entered high school already being known as the most hype freshman anyone had ever seen, I knew I had to leave my mark.…

Regular meetings with the identified groups and individuals would be mandated in the bylaws for all senators. Bess (2008) describes structure as “the rules and resources that group members use to sustain the social system.” Adoption of this proposal is intended to alter the structure of the relationship by clearly defining a method of communication and interaction, or the rules by which the parties interact. By altering both the context in which the senators operate, along with the structure previously in place, informal ad-hoc relationships with constituents will be replaced with a more formal and well-defined communication channel. The goal of this effort is to provide a more effective student government organization that is able to more rapidly identify student issues and work more nimbly to correct…

During the last week of my junior year, I attended South Dakota's Boy's State. For me this was an interesting experience because for the first time I was surrounded not only by the brightest students in my school, but the best and brightest from the entire state. Overall, this was an eye-opening experience because everyone attending had thoughts to contribute to running our own state. Those who became involved had their own personal perspective that was shaped by the social, economic, and geographical characteristics of their home region. The most intriguing aspect of the week had nothing to do with actual government policy.…

Because of this misconception, he is planning to show people that athletes can be more than just athletes by running for Student Government Association Student Body President. “I definitely don’t think student-athletes put athletics first,” Sorbe emphasized. “A student-athlete can be a leader on campus outside of athletics and I’m excited to prove that.”…

Establishing legitimization occurs when an entity posses the right to be heard and taken seriously (Simons & Jones, 2015). By choosing two students a part of the Legislative Branch of the SUNY Fredonia Student Association the campaign would establish the legitimacy it needs to be successful. According to the SUNY Fredonia website members of the Legislative Branch are responsible for voting on statute changes, budgetary requests, re-acknowledgements, appointments, and more (Fredonia SA, 2015). These two students hold official positions of power within the university, and also act as informal opinion leaders out the institution. Based off of Recruit the Student, the Community Carriage Campaign believes students are the most effective rhetors to convince other students, because they can understand the audience’s beliefs, attitudes, and values (Smith, 2004).…

What’s Wrong with Student Governments.. (Glass, 1975) Lack of support from students; student apathy is present across campuses, If students are to view student government or any student organization as an effective and meaningful arena for participation, then it has to be so. Bureaucratization, elitism, and under representation; the often complex bureaucracy which often times parallel administration/federal government is one which students do not understand and acts as a barrier to participation. Many organizations have an undemocratic representational structure which do not guarantee the representation of all students in a proportional manner (example – at large elections).…

Personal Philosophy of the Student Affairs Field Reflecting on my personal college experience and those of my peers, I believe that the field of Student Affairs provides a unique and even essential opportunity to help shape the experience that student’s receive within the university setting. I strongly believe that students gain more from their college experience learning and growing outside of the classroom rather than inside. Self-discovery and personal exploration through extra-curricular activities and interpersonal interactions guide students through their academic careers and develop who they wish to become as an adult facing the “real world.” Student Affairs professionals help to ensure that each student begins their track to self-discovery…
