As a reapplicant, there are many objectives that I have completed, since last cycle, to strengthen my application. I had a plans to increase my GPA by taking more science courses as well as improve upon my last OAT examination score. I began taking courses during the summer semester of 2016 and continue, to this day, to strengthen my optometry experience through my job at the Eye Institute of Southeastern Michigan. In terms of the courses I have taken to improve my candidacy, I have completed five additional courses in Biology and Chemistry. I concluded my General Chemistry prerequisites as well as a course in Genetics to help boost my basic sciences. I also completed two semesters of Anatomy & Physiology. Not only will these courses help …show more content…
My number one priority was to improve my score regardless of how many times I had to retake it. At this point I had already taken the exam twice and was particularly unhappy with both results. My original strategy was to cut my work hours and dedicate more time to preparing myself. That did not go as planned. I eventually enrolled in a Kaplan OAT prep course which, although expensive, gave me access to a wide variety of materials to improve my study techniques and broaden my range of knowledge. In the end I did improve my overall average as well as my total science average, but there is always room for more improvement. My optometry experience grows everyday. Learning and working with Dr. William Shaheen has not only instilled great excitement and motivation in me for the field of optometry, it has also shown me the enormous responsibility that accompanies the privilege of being an optometrist. He emphasizes continuing education and keep up with current research to provide the best care for his patients. I have worked under the tutelage of Dr. Shaheen since July of 2015 and will continue to do so until I am able to begin a professional Optometry

Honestly, I am not a very motivated person. I tend to try hard in school for the sole purpose of receiving an A. I never had thought of learning as an activity, but rather a priority. A priority that exists once again, for the purpose of getting an A. In my head, if I received an A, I would feel secure and my life would be able to move along smoothly. Receive a B, and my whole world would stop. Sadly, it seemed almost impossible for me to receive even close to a B when it came to writing.…

Throughout high school, I have been involved in many activities. I started off with the STEM academy in my high school. In the STEM academy, we held special events that teach people, especially kids, about new experiments and science-related careers. I helped out the STEM academy by explaining people about the experiments, the purpose behind the experiments and cleaned or organized lab equipment. I was a part of the STEM academy for approximately three years in high school and I really enjoyed it because I knew I could make a difference in my community.…

Discussion Why is independent prescribing important? In my own opinion, I feel that independent prescribing is important to the society, as it does not take up medical professional skills and their valuable time. Independent prescribing over time will help to take pressure of the health system as well as the workload. It also ensures there are a reduction in the “unnecessary A and E and hospital admissions”, suggested by Royal College of nursing 2012.…

Pursuing a career in the medical field can be a daunting task. Up to 12 years of postsecondary schooling combined with the competitive nature of the field is enough to deter most people away. However there is an option in the medical field that could be more appealing, optometry, the practice of examining eyes and prescribing lenses. Optometry allows people like myself the opportunity to reap the benefits of being a doctor while skipping out on some of the less attractive aspects of the medical field. Unlike normal physicians, optometrists have a relatively easy, low stress job.…

My story of my interest in optometry begins when I visited the optometrist for the first time when I was five years old. Since my vision at that time was normal, and none of my family members wore glasses, my parents thought that my vision would remain the same throughout my life and that annual eye exams would not be necessary. Unfortunately, this assumption was incorrect, and my vision did weaken as I grew older. The change in my eyesight was very gradual, so much so that I hardly realized just how much of the world I was unable to see.…

Before this class began I expected this class to show me the ins and outs of being a successful college student. My assumptions were very valid, because every assignment we have worked on has had something to do with being a successful college student. Before taking this course I was not knowledgeable about many resources I have at Cedar Valley. In this course I had to figure out things by myself and take responsibility as a college student. I had to stay on top of my assignments because nobody else would be checking for me.…

Strolling through the mall in search of an optometrist office I visited two years ago, I ran into a doctor by the name of Courtney Thompson. She was wearing green scrubs and white tennis shoes along with a warm smile. She spoke with a pleasant tone as she politely asked, “How can I help you today?” It took me by surprise that attention was directed towards me. I inquisitively responded, “I am looking for an optometrist office to speak with a doctor in regards to shadowing.”…
