Another example of how the education system is weakening is best modeled by this generation of teenagers. This generation has struggled with competition being removed from classrooms, grade scales being based on effort instead of achievement and overall, grades being more imperative than knowledge. Cristina Hernandez, Class President and Advanced Placement (AP) student, stated that, “I had to be very independent mid-junior year, I always cared for school and doing well but I never knew that school was an investment for my future or that I needed certain things to get into college;…

Asian students also represent another minority group with educational problems, although different from what the other minority groups face. Asian Americans represent around 4% of the U.S. population, and make up 20% of the students at U.S. Ivy League schools (Kornblum & Julian, 2012). Asian students tend to acquire higher levels of achievement and educational attainment. As a result, they can be treated and seen as a ‘model minority’ where they face higher expectations for such academic endeavors (Hsin & Xie, 2014). With these extremely high expectations, many Asian students find it difficult to meet it, which can lead to higher levels of stress, depression, and low self-esteem.…

As any student knows, grades are reflective of their accomplishments in a given class. However, grades mean much more to students than whether they know the material or not. Grades mean whether or not someone will get into their college of choice, whether or not they have to retake that class they had failed as a result of an emotional semester, whether or not they are hired for a position against someone who graduated with a higher grade-point average (GPA). Students are under more duress than ever to be academically excellent because of the mounting pressure in the American education system. This pressure is due to GPA inflation and expectations of above-average academic performance.…

However, if the goal of our education system is to ensure that all students leave high school ready for what’s next, be it college or a meaningful career, we need to provide students who need the most (and the schools that educate them) with more support, not less (Ushomirsky &Williams, 2015). The only way students can go to college and graduate high school in low-income schools is by equity. Overall, equity in education has been proven to improve students’ success, well-being, and school, which can close the racial achievement gap among low-income…
