Arguments Against Gmo

The Fight Against GMO’s; Education is Key! Yes, it may be cool to buy a tomato that is the size of your head, a grape that tastes like cotton candy, or an apple that never turns brown… or is it? Corn, canola oil, soy, zucchini, cotton, alfalfa, sugar beet, and papaya. These eight food are the top genetically modified foods in the United States. That being said 70 percent of foods in American grocery stores have been genetically altered in some shape or form. Surprised by this? Honestly, I am not. Although GMOs have their benefits, they are infiltrating every aspect of our food. We would not voluntarily eat a battery, or drink a cup of bleach. Although extreme examples, it brings up the following question, are humans meant to eat what is not meant to be eaten? Congressman Tim Ryan recently said, “Our bodies are not meant to deal with fake food”. As of 2016, twenty-six countries have banned GMOs and 61 countries require GM foods to be labeled. Why is American not part of this statistic? Is it that we don’t care what we put into our bodies, or is it that GM foods have been so deeply embedded into not only our culture but our economy that it would be detrimental to change. That is a sticking statistic that could easily be lowered if the American public was better educated. As of today, the United States does not require GMO labeling. So how can American know what foods are GM-free? If a product is labeled as certified organic, it legally cannot contain any GMOs. Us as consumers have the power to protest GMOs by not buys products from companies know to heavily use GMOs in the food products. Instead, buy from companies who have gone GMO-free.
