Remember that day you were in the store with your mom and saw that REALLY long banana? Or that extra fat apple? Well, that may have something to with something called genetically modified foods, also known as GMO. GMO is when any organism has been genetically modified using engineering techniques. Scientists and bio-tech companies use this technique in our foods. Such as our fruit and crops. Many believe that GMO is an important aspect, because without it, it could lead to famine, and world hunger. We use GMO’s to enhance our foods. Let’s take our potato crops in Ireland for example. Without the help of GMO’s, the crops are exposed to a certain water mold called late blight. Late blight attacks the crops and has even caused 1 billion in crop damage. But when added, the potatoes withstood the blight, packaging damages, and even bruising. GMO additives even have the benefits of adding vitamins to our daily diets. Such as pregnant women in Africa, being deprived of iron. Are now getting it through the GMO in their food. And poor children across the world are being helped by the vitamin A being modified into the rice. We need GMO’s to help with hunger crisis throughout the world. GMO’s are very helpful.
