Genetically modified organisms, also known as GMOs is a huge controversial topic within the public eye filled with ethical, medical, and multiple more topics surrounding the issue of genetically modified organisms. Genetically modified organisms is a group of organisms whose genome has been altered by the techniques of genetic engineering so that its DNA contains one or more genes not normally found there. GMO testing can be done on both plants and animals, in fact, a high percentage of food crops are genetically modified in modern society, and this is because of the research boost on genetic engineering in 1996. Another example of GMOs would be most of the food plants that we consume. Nearly 88% of crops grown in the US are genetically modified and just in TN our top producing crop is soybean which 93% of all soy is genetically modified. Farmers today have mixed reviews about GMOs some of the positive feedback for genetically modified organisms, especially crops is that it creates a more reliable harvest with less use of pesticides and fertilizer. It also creates less of a problem with weeds so less tilling of the ground which then depletes erosion greatly within the farmland. With the use of chemicals gone it makes it cheaper to grow the plants with even more yield. Yet where there is good there is the bad, GM organisms are more expensive and get a negative perception with consumers, but not only that since 2016 there have been 16 resistant weed species to the natural occurring pesticides in specified GM crops.
