According to the World Health Organization GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) are defined as organisms whose genetic material has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally. There is much speculation and debate in the political, business, and scientific community as to their benefits and drawbacks. One of the highest genetically modified species includes soybeans and in fact up to 85% of soybeans grown in the United States of America have been genetically modified. Economic pressures have caused more and more nations to start producing GM soybean. Despite the common misconception that GMO’s only do damage to their surrounding environment there has been far-reaching research and evidence disproving this theory. A study of the global environmental impacts between the years of 1996 and 2012 showed that the amount of herbicide spraying has been reduced by 503 million kilograms (Brooks & Barfoot, 2005). According to Figure 2.0 courtesy of U.S. Grain councils the amount of farmers profit has increased up to 68.2% yet the pesticide quantity has significantly reduced by approximately 36.9%.This reduction has decreased the ecological footprint through herbicide and pesticide use by approximately 18.7%. In addition the greenhouse gas emissions in the US through the use of agricultural machines have decreased in an amount equal to that of eradicating 11.9 million cars off the road (Fawcett, R and D Towery. 2002). If the European Union were to adopt the use of GM-Soy it would decrease 14.5 million kilograms of formulated herbicide (Phipps, 2002). To add on the use of Roundup ready or herbicide tolerant soy crop has paved the way for conservative/no-tiling agricultural methods saving near to 1 billion tons of soil annually. The use and implementation of GMO-soy has allowed for the expansion in both export and import markets. The GM-soy market has strengthened trade relations between the United States and China as well as many other emerging nations. Secondly the use of GM crop has demonstrated no situational illnesses caused by the crop itself. All-encompassing research and evidence has proven that the transfer of genetic material from genetically altered plants to pathogenic bacteria is extremely low. Furthermore the development of safety standards has ensured that most allergic reactions caused through genetic splicing can now be evaded rendering the GM-crop relatively harmless. Lastly the application of genetically modified soy has resulted in little to no unbiased evidence of negative environmental impacts in the short or long term. Rather mostly positive outcomes have come from the transfer to GM crop. There has been a significant reduction in amount of pesticide/herbicide, water, and land usage.
