GHP Personal Statement

Attending GHP would be a dream come true because I have desired the opportunity to participate in GHP since freshmen year when I learned what GHP is. It is an amazing program that could help me grow not only as a student but also a person. I believe that GHP will provide me with a unique experience which will further my preparedness for college. It will be my first time traveling for an elongated period of time without my family alongside me. Additionally, we are given more support from a teacher in high school than that given in college, so I will encounter the effort required to do well in college. I will face challenges because of this, but overcoming them will bring forth a great victory because I will come out as a more independent woman than I was before. Moreover, I will have a platform to express my true self, instead of living in the shadows of the expectations placed on me by my parents and my school. Although I do my best to never disappoint and maintain their expectations, I will have the ability of determining my own goals. GHP will also introduce me to new lasting friendships with students as dedicated and passionate about their future as I am.

I am an open-minded person therefore I would receptive to different beliefs and instead of shooting them down, I would assimilate the beliefs. Finding a program that would help me explore my interests in science and provide me with the knowledge to procure a profession in the medical field was a very rigorous task, however the Health Profession Recruitment and Exposure Program clearly emerged on top. After reading the description available online, I knew that HPREP would not only enhance my interest in the medical field, but also reshape my vision of the science world. I look forward to participating in the small group workshops led by medical students as I believe they will expose me to medical activities early on in my career that will spark a further interest. Also the ability to ask questions and work with the medical students, fellow students, and teachers will enable me to make connections, obtain unique advice and allow me to have a mentor or person I can reach out to and follow his or her footsteps to my own goals.…

I became interested in Korean during my sophomore year in high school. At the time, I was learning Mandarin in school and exploring French outside of school. Due to the experience, I was able to gain insight on my learning capabilities and understand my learning style. Frankly, I found it remarkably difficult to balance my study of French with my school related pursuits. This was not necessarily due to the difficulty of the task, but my inability to create a firm platform for me to expand my knowledge from.…

I’ve been an advocate for complementary and alternative medicine all my adult life, often questioning the conventional, often-toxic treatments doctors regularly and conveniently prescribe for different ailments, including cancers. I believe too many doctors lean heavily on the pharmaceutical industry, which has financial disincentive to promote alternative treatment options. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011, I elected not to undergo doctor recommended ‘slash and burn’ surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Instead, I researched alternative therapies that included high-dose Vitamin C mixes.…

Consequently, I am writing to express my interest in and enthusiasm towards the Survey Research Summer Internship at NORC at the University of Chicago for the summer of 2018. Before becoming a student at Johns Hopkins, my previous work experiences spanned a range from academia, to on-the-ground field programming, to the governmental public health workforce internationally and in the US. My interest in innovative, collaborative, and multidisciplinary research led me to perform meta-analyses with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, design and coordinate household vulnerability surveys in Ethiopia, conduct varied geospatial analysis research, and work with HIV and maternal health programs both in Uganda and in Baltimore City. Public service has always been a vital part of my life. Growing up as the daughter of a pastor, I watched my father vigorously serve not only the members of his church but also his community. He taught me the art of serving, and the attitude I should have while serving. My father has encouraged me to help the voiceless, powerless, and those often forgotten. While he taught me the attitude behind serving, my own experiences broadened the scope of my skills which ultimately made me more effective in my service.…

The concept of friendship is both odd and extraordinary at the same time. The majority of people on this earth want to be surrounded by other people who think like them, talk like them, and agree with them. Most people look for friends as someone who will listen, give advice or basically go out to have a good time with. That being said, people also look for friends as someone who they can connect to. For example, one day I was playing basketball for my church team, when a new kid from Texas showed up and wanted to play.…
