GE Credit Course Reflective Report

Improved Essays
About 15 weeks ago, I took Theatre 2100 at OSU as a GE credit course. My major was Biology. I had taken Theatre 100 in 1998 and received a D. “Fresh Start” rule erased that upon my return. I was apprehensive about repeating this course. However after taking it and reflecting on where I began, I can honestly say this course has changed me. One of the major undertakings of this course is the creative project. It is a chance for underclassmen to collaborate, apply the knowledge gained through our coursework, derive a 5 minute production through leadership and responsibility and most importantly have fun. I was our stage manager. Communication, leadership and organization were my responsibility. Our play was well researched and written, our

“If theatre were available during the school day for all students, it would allow most students to experience the joy of theatre, even those who wouldn’t necessarily try it outside of school.” For Mueller, theatre has proven an integral part of her education, identity, and now even her career. A 2008 State High alumna, she reflects on her SCASD experience: “My best memories are from high school when I had the opportunity to sing in many choirs and perform with the State High Thespians,” said Mueller.…

Being a senior in showchoir is a challenge! Many of the underclassmen look to you for advice or seek help when they need it. My leadership skills were also pushed last year and this year for “Dancing with the Teachers”, which is a show the showchoir puts on early in the school year. We are split into groups of about 6 or 7 out of the 40 or so members, and then we must select a teacher to be in each of our groups. We, being the seniors, then have to create a mix of songs and a dance to perform in this show.…

Rube Goldberg and Beyond The objective of this essay is to ask a question that you would like to answer as part of the scholarship application. My question is “What is an example of a creative approach you took to accomplish a project you were assigned?” As a high school physics student in my junior year, I was placed on a team and tasked with building a Rube Goldberg machine that could move an object 20 feet. I started the process by watching several YouTube videos that demonstrated the basics of a Rube Goldberg machine (i.e., balls rolling, random ramps, many moving parts, etc.)…

Initially I started this assignment by carefully reviewing over the worksheet given to me before the in-class assignment. The assignment was to create a scene with “silent tension” and to incorporate several elements such as a moment of pause. Even though I might not have to direct the scene, I started to think in a sense of how a director might approach this assignment and create a scene. I started to reference the “dead theatre” essay written by Peter Brook. I wanted to create a scene that the audience could emotionally and spiritually relate to.…

My flexibility and open-mindedness are major assets to me in the creative process. I am willing to explore wide and opposing ideas on many topics, and do not fear controversial or touchy discussion. I strive to create theatre without preconceived notions about the finished product, and am willing to see how the creative process guides our devised piece. I also do not fear taking a directorial role in a creative piece. Though a thorough and unstructured exploration of a topic is necessary in devising theatre, I know that the piece will have to take structure and hold to a vision as it moves from exploration to performance.…

Although technical theatre is not my cup of tea, I did enjoy learning about some of the things. That is why I am choosing to talk about my two favorite things we discussed this semester: scenic painting and drafting. The first, scenic painting is the one I had the most experience with coming into. To find employment opportunities dealing with scenic painting I went to google and typed in “jobs that require scenic painting.” Surprisingly, I found more than I would have thought.…

From the beginning of my education, I have always been fascinated with working in medical fields. I have also always had my heart set on attending university in order to study my chosen subject, Paramedic Science/Practise. I have chosen this as it would lead to a career i would love to do due to my massive respect for paramedics and the exciting and challenging role they have. This respect stems from having many family members involved in the NHS and healthcare. My sister, for example, is a massive inspiration as she has managed to work her way up from a student nurse to Head Sister in one of the busiest A&E units in the country.…

Because Appetite For Love holds such a treasured place in my heart (I got to interview both male leads--Andrew Walker and Marcus Rosner--and they were kind enough to let a novice feature them), I often find myself going back to my review of that film and attempting to connect with the supporting cast of that momentous film. In the case of Antonio Cayonne, I was so pleased to see that he is again being featured in a Valentine's film on Hallmark, and it was a great joy when he agreed to answer a few questions about his journey to become an actor, his current and notable works, and his general outlook on the industry and life as a whole. RH: Why did you decide to become an actor?…

Robert Cohen and John Harrop begin their creative directing instruction Creative Play Direction by presenting a brief history of the advent of directors. In their first chapter “The Directorial Function,” the authors make a clear emphasis on one definite role of directors; they should have a diverse knowledge of everything in a theatre, ranging from the script to various production elements. Separated into ten chapters, the book explores script interpretation, theatrical compositions, director-actor interaction and styling of a play. Skimming through the chapters, it is apparent that the writers want directors to know everything since the book covers the design elements of production such as the ground plan, lighting, and sound, which people…
