GBRF Negotiation Case Study

The Great Bear Rainforest (GBRF) Negotiation began by allowing each stakeholder to outline their expectations and what was at stake. Furthermore, each group was given the opportunity to express their individual perspectives and the value of each factor. Negotiations began by discussing the immediate discrepancies amongst each stakeholders’ expectations, and seeking a resolution beneficial to each party involved. Overall, negotiations were relatively calm and level-headed, with the forestry industry being very accepting and willing to work alongside the other stakeholders. Primary disputes resulted from differing perspective on the designation of the GBRF region and resources. As a result, the negotiation revolved around the distribution of the region and the Terms of Agreement were primarily focussed amongst the division of the region. The agreed upon terms allocate 30% of the GBRF towards National Parks and tourism, which will increase jobs in the region, as well as revenues from tourist activity. Designation as a National Park will allow the provincial government to reap the benefits of increased tourism, without incurring additional costs, and will increase the reputation of the …show more content…
The last 10 million acres are available for creating economic sustainability, building casinos, hotels and other businesses. Of the revenues resulting from this region, 10% must be given to the federal government to fund further tourist attractions in the GBRF, while 5% is specified towards the provincial government in order to help maintain the provincial economy.
