She is responsible for convincing Roskolnivok to confess that he has killed two people. She is a well rounded character who truly cares for Roskolnivok. I believe Dunya is a well rounded character as well. She is the sister of Roskolnivok and resembles Sonya because she cares deeply about her family. Katerina seems to be the stereotype character. She wants it to be known what kind of family she came from as a distraction from the fact that she is poor now.
When Roskolnikov meets Sonya in her room he asks her to read the story of Lazarus. He feels that this can bring him clarity and he can now move on with his life. He tries to confess what he has done in this scene and feels he can do so because of his feelings towards her. Roskolnikov telling Sonya that she is "necessary" to him is his declaration of his love for her.
