Exercise 1: Lung Volumes and Capacities

The predicted values are based on the Goldman and Becklake equations for Pulmonary Function (cited from the John Hopkins Pulmonary Laboratory).

Comment on the differences between the experimental and predicted values for FVC, FEV1 and the FEV1/FVC ratio. What could cause these differences, if any?
The experimental values for FVC and FEV1 are lower than the predicted values but the FEV1/FVC ratio is similar. The FVC is very low compare to the predicted value. These differences may be due to the experimental error or other environmental factors. The subject maybe didn’t exhale the air forcefully and have a small chest cavity. Also, any illness, differences in height and age might have caused the differences.

3. What is the physiological/pathological significance of the FEV1/FVC ratio?
FEV1/FVC ratio Is the percentage of forced vital capacity expelled during the 1st second of a forced expiration.

2 marks
4. Were your results for forced breathing consistent across all three trials? If not, why not?
The forced breathing readings weren’t not consistent as they were different to each other. The subject found it hard to follow the procedure accordingly to inhale and exhale hence the values were different.

Liver Lab By: Jonah Stillman Background Information: Catalase enzymes are inside of nearly every living organism that is exposed to oxygen. Some examples of catalase enzymes are bacteria, plants, and animals. The main job of a catalase enzyme is to catalyze the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen. When an enzyme is exposed to hydrogen peroxide or certain other chemicals it is prone to react. Catalase enzyme reactions also depend on the temperature they are exposed to.…

The ventricle is where the majority of the work is done in the heart of Bufo marinus, as it is the chamber where blood pumps out into the blood stream through the aorta in order to travel around the body or flows through the pulmonary artery to the lungs to become oxygenated. As a result of the tasks this chamber completes, it is required that there is more muscle tissue in order to undergo the pressure required in these tasks. 6. What biological reasons can you think of for the variations between data sets in your comparative analysis figure (Figure 1)?…

As vasoconstriction increases due to increased pulmonary vascular resistance hypoxia occurs and eventually respiratory acidosis and is monitored through arterial blood gases (Kuhajda et al., 2014). Upon examination patient appears to be in respiratory distress - gasping for air and tracheal deviation as the lung space has decreased and pressures continue to rise, neck vein distention due to altered cardiac output, cyanosis and agitation set in as time goes on due to hypoxia and the increasing difficulty to breath (Crimlisk, 2010). Palpation reveals subcutaneous emphysema as air is trapped within the tissues. Upon listening to the patients chest there is reduced air entry and percussion reveals hyperresonance (Kuhajda et al., 2014). Generally, air enters the pleural space which shifts the equilibrium causing pressure on the surrounding organs and decreases adequate perfusion and…

Nose clips were placed on the participants to prevent nasal breathing; another clip was attached to the ear to monitor blood oxygen levels. After the recordings were taken, participants were then ordered to begin rebreathing resulting in voluntary maximal end-respiratory apnea. Participants were then ordered to take two breaths from rebreathing bags after apnea stopped in order to record the peak of hypoxia and hypercapnia…

While a patient is using mechanical ventilation, every breath is begun by the use of a trigger. Most ventilator modes use a set flow, pressure or time as the trigger. However, in the case of NAVA ventilation the trigger is the electrical signal from the brain to the phrenic nerve. The EdiCatheter transmits this signal and causes the diaphragm to elevate causing negative pressure to inspire flow from the ventilator. The patient’s peak inspiratory pressures (PIP) will vary based on the strength and amount of electrical activity generated by the diaphragm.…

The positive effects of HFNC were seen as early as 5 minutes after intervention through the end of the study, except at 30minutes where there seemed to be no change (Rittayami et al., 2015). The comfort level of the subjects who used the HFNC was reported to be higher than that of the subjects who used COT (Rittayami et al., 2015). During the 10 minute to 30 minute period, a substantial reduction of breathing frequency was found in the HFNC subjects (Rittayami et al., 2015). The heart rate was also notably lower in the HFNC group at the end of the study (Rittayami et al., 2015). There were no severe adverse effects at the end of the study (Rittayami et al., 2015).…

Myasthenia crisis affects the respiratory muscles in the upper airway (Levine 2011). A physical sign a patient is experiencing a crisis is patients will use there accessory muscles to breathe and lack the ability to count to 20 (Levine 2011). Inspiratory function is determined by vital capacity (VC) and negative inspiratory force NIF (Levine 2011). A VC less than 1 L or a NIG less than 20cm H20 is an indicator for respiratory weakness (Levine 2011). A positive expiratory force (PEF) of less than 40cm H2O may be an indicator for a crisis (Levine 2011).…

This equation expresses the relationship between these values; DLCO= VCO/PASO where a volume of gas must be at standard temperature (0.0oC), 0.0% saturated with water vapor and pressure (760mm Hg). The three methods used to measuring DLCO and acquiring the two values are, single breath method (DLCO-SB), steady-state, and rebreathing method (DLCO-RB). Approximately a single- breath method is the mostly uses by all pulmonary function laboratories because it is quicker to perform than other techniques such as rebreathing technique. In the single-breath technique, a technologist will instruct you on how to perform the test and encourage you to do your best. In this test, the patient will seated, has a nose clip and mouthpiece in place.…

Muscular dystrophy is a hereditary disease that causes the muscles in your body to weaken, and become wasted. It is a rare disease that affects 20,00 to 200,00 United States citizens per year. It can have life lasting effects on the ones infected. The Department of Medicine/Cardiology, at the University of Minnesota Medical School did a study on prevention for the most common fatal form of muscular dystrophy, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Duchenne Muscular dystrophy is caused by an absence of a protein that keeps muscles in tact, dystrophin.…

During passive or quiet breathing, the muscles used for ventilation are the diaphragm, external intercostals, scalenes, and sternocleidomastoids (pg. 536 Silverthorn). Inhalation and exhalation begin with the contraction and relaxation of the diaphragm, a dome-shaped muscle beneath the lungs. The diaphragm’s contraction downward provides a vacuum of pressure differences to bring air into the lungs. During exhalation, the diaphragm is relaxed upwards, pushing air out of the lungs. The lungs have a spongy tissue with its volume engaged in air-filled spaces.…
