Over time, writer's learn and develop new strengths and weaknesses that help develop them to become the best writer they can be. Through the course of this class I have developed a better understanding of my writing strengths, weaknesses and strategized ways to improve future writing's.
Over the past month, I have learned a variety of skills that I flourish in when it comes to writing. Foremost, I do well with spelling. In school I was selected to be in the spelling bee. I did not win; however, I made it more than half way through the contest. Secondly, a skill I do well with is typing. The high school I attended utilized computers on a daily basis; therefore, I built a strong typing foundation the years I attended. Furthermore, I also do well with organization and paragraph unity. As a writer, I like

My biggest weaknesses lie in the realm of punctuation. The first culprit is the coma, I tend to either go overboard with comas, or never put them in; therefore, run-ons and coma splices pop up all over my papers. Along with comas, I also struggle with the usage of the apostrophe. I find I am either adding it to the wrong place in a word, or not adding it at all. Alongside punctuation, I struggle with word choices. I tend to use vague words such as it and thing; thus, leaving the reader thirsting for more description. I also like to add in words that aren't needed, such as, I believe, personally, I feel, I think etc. Secondly, I find myself using contractions like they are going out of business. Most of the time I do not realize I am using them until I proof read my paper. Lastly, I struggle with writing fluently. When I make a mistake, it becomes my only focus; therefore, I lose my train of

After reading Mike Bunn’s “How to Read Like a Writer,” I revisited my directed self-placement essay while asking myself the many questions Bunn recommends to ask oneself when “reading like a writer.” In doing so, I was able to recognize the strengths and weaknesses I possess as a writer, and therefore know where I need to grow the most as a writer. One of my greatest strengths as a writer is knowing my audience and composing my writing accordingly. I am aware that when my audience is a teacher who will be reading and grading plenty of the same essays to include original ideas and arguments; it gets boring reading the same type of paper and ideas over and over. Along with my well thought out ideas and arguments, I also credit myself with the ability of using appropriate evidence from credible sources that support my claims.…

I wrote one “source-based argumentative essay” in high school: my final essay from sophomore English. The guidelines were to write a four to eight page paper on any topic of your choice, but the thesis of the paper had to come across clearly. At the time, my personal goals were to write about something no one else would, as well as get an A in the class. As a future collegiate writer, I feel as though I have the habits and potential strengths to be successful, but my biggest weakness is that I do not know how to write a professional essay and I am a reluctant editor.…

Writing has not been my strongest subject throughout my time being in school. I’ve always struggled with the English language since it was my second language. This transferred to my writing and it was very noticeable. However, during my time in the Writing 39 series, it has influenced me to use the strategies I learned in writing and apply it to other classes. One thing I’ve discovered from being in Writing 39B is how to interpret the author’s purpose.…

Writing is a language used to convey or prove something. However, humans don’t get the skills to effectively describe what they are talking about from the air. Writing is a skill that requires a lot of practice to master. Because during our lifetimes we gradually get exposed to more difficult types of writing from narrative and expository writing in middle school, to argumentative writing in high school. We need to develop that skill through hardships, trial and error, and even our accomplishments from the moment we stepped into a middle school to graduating from college.…

Principle and Methods Reflection Writing may seem like a gift that some do not possess, but it is simply a skill that develops with long hours of practice and dedication. William Zinsser constructed a novel explaining the true amount of effort writing requires. He introduced ten principles and methods that enhance writing skills when perfected. These principles take concepts that most upcoming writers struggle to grasp and strip them into easily taught lessons. Out of the ten principles and methods introduced, five reflected strengths and weakness that would be valuable in my personal repertoire once corrected and mastered.…

According to recent studies, many students do not have good writing skills (Simpkins, Crews, & Groves, 2012). In today’s society, there are many contributing factors which are found to be a cause of bad writing. It is my belief that three of the most valuable skills one can have in life are public speaking, reading comprehension, and writing. These three skills are vital to everyday life, and I feel that everyone should strive to master these skills to the best of their ability. Out of the three techniques, I would have to concede that writing is by far my weakest. However, the eight weeks I have spent in Writing 101 have truly helped me to become a better writer. Over the course of those eight weeks my writing skills, that had been suffering from years of atrophy, were challenged; the biggest challenge of all being the research paper I did on the use of the atomic bomb.…

Anyone can be a writer. The numbers that can actually be good writers, on the other hand, are much slimmer. On Writing, a memoir by the highly acclaimed Stephen King, gives its readers a glimpse into the author's private and professional life and just what exactly does it take to make it as a writer. Throughout the book, King constantly hammers in the fact that those who plan to write a novel in hopes of it becoming a bestseller, so that they may reap in the fame and fortune that follows it, should just stop writing then and there.…

“You Can’t Write That Way:” Experiences of a Future Writing Teacher My experience with writing has dominated my life and the decisions I have made. I love all expressive modes of writing, but the response one gets can differ greatly depending on the reader, therefore, I do not like getting feedback on writing. However, when I write for an implied audience that does not get to know my words, I feel like a speaker in a large auditorium, boldly proclaiming my truths to the cold, silent stone. This simultaneous desire for a reader and dread of a reader’s response creates an overall ambivalence towards writing– a love of creating and being an author, and a dread of receiving feedback and having a reader that is not amused by my words.…

I have developed strong writing skills throughout the semester; any pieces of writing I have written have improved every time. Looking back at my essay and revising them to be placed in my portfolio, I saw where my weaknesses were and where my strengths were. Just by reading my past essays, I noticed how I have grown as a writer. While plagiarism percentage wasn’t an issue and transitional words were my specialty, using broader vocabulary, staying on one point of view, focusing on my main idea, creating complex sentences, assembling my thoughts onto paper, and using literary techniques to grasp my audience’s attention were my weaknesses. And while I have enriched my writing skills over this term, there is still more room for improvement and…

Through the intense brainstorming, structured outlining, and many revisions of my paper assignments, I have developed a sense of confidence about my writing. Throughout the many paper assignments throughout my lifetime, I learned to dislike comparison and contrast papers the most because I felt coerced into following a specific structure.…
