Cure Violence www.cureviolence.org Cure Violence is an organization founded by epidemiologist Gary Slutkin. Dr. Slutkin spent a decade in underdeveloped countries, fighting epidemic diseases. When he returned to the US, he’d all but forgotten what it was like to have running water, and adjustable temperature in the home. He also had no news of the US, so he found it both dismaying and compelling to hear about the rampant violence in some parts of the US, most especially in Chicago, Illinois. As a result, Dr. Slutkin began researching the violence problem in the same way that he tracked infectious diseases in those other countries, and he found that the trajectories were the same.…

Trayvon’s tragic death brought to light the ugly underbelly of police brutality and how, statistically, it effects African Americans at a much higher rate than any other demographic in the United States. The Black Lives Matter Movement begs modern society to recognize the structural and systemized racism that has been engrained into the fabric of past and present American culture; to realize that racism experienced at the microsociological level is a societal output of the disproportionate privilege white people are granted. As an aside, this brings up the idea that conflict theory, as a disadvantage, is weakest at the individual level (not unlike other social theories). It works more efficiently to explain social change and the uneven distribution of benefits on a macrosociological level rather than the effects of the Marxist conflict theory on a smaller scale in individual lives. It is a framework for social change however is weak in describing social stability – the ability or inability to explain why people are able to function together and cooperate.…

This can be termed as the need to eradicate violence was ignited by the realization by the Women’s Country members that their present state was precipitated by the violent past of their culture, as such for the sake of self-preservation and the preservation of future generations. This is further initiated through selective bleeding. This can be realized as a civic engagement as it instills notions in the participants that selective breeding could raise a desired society at their will. It is so as it also targets a group of people namely the women. This can also be evidenced by the way the women ensure that they controlled sexual contact with the male fraternity.…
