My body was tense all day. When I arrived home, it grew worse. I was reduced to a simple capacity of timed clicks on my computer. At 4PM, my future changed. I was matched to Rice University through QuestBridge on December 1st. The implication – I could avoid the student debt, attend college for free, and discover new opportunities required to learn and grow. I was ecstatic to be a Rice Owl. Rice University is diverse in their student body and prospects they offer. However, their history is also a point of fascination for its birth was at its founders demise. On May 18, 1891, a businessman from Massachusetts William Marsh Rice decided to charter an institute “of the highest grade” in Houston upon his death. Albert Patrick and Rice’s valet, Charlie Jones, murdered Rice on September 23, 1900. Upon Rice’s request in his will, the Rice Institute was created, and exactly twelve years later, the Institute opened to admit a co-ed student body of 77 students. Edgar Odell Lovett became the first president of Rice and proposed the residential college system that Rice adopted in 1958. The Rice Institute officially was named Rice University in 1960. Rice University has a diverse student body with 61% of the incoming class of 2019 to be minorities. There is fair representation of both females and males as well. In addition, Rice students are known to taking advantage of the surrounding city of Houston. Houston offers great opportunities for it is home of NASA, oil refineries, and more Fortune 500 businesses than any other cities besides New York City. Right across from the university is the Texas Medical Center, one of the largest in the world. Because of the amazing students and opportunities in Rice University, it not a surprise that Rice University is ranked 18th in the nation. Rice University is also ranked 1st in quality of life.
