The IOM report looked into nursing education and made its recommendations. The recommendations, is believe will bring about quality improvement in patient safety. According to the IOM report, the format of nursing education must be changed for nurses to acquire higher education to face the challenges of health care delivery which requires more complex roles from nurses as a result of changing in demographics. Given rapid expansion of the health care industry and the changing in the demographics of patient population, an educated nursing 2010 IOM report on the future of nursing 3 workforce is needed to be able to take up this responsibility. The IOM report also recommended that baccalaureate degree nurses should be increased to 80% in the U.S by the Year 2020. According to the report, nurses should engage in lifelong learning by continuing education courses even after receiving their nursing license. This means nurses showing interest to continue their education not just be satisfied for completing one nursing program. It also means that associate graduate nurses should go for their baccalaureate degree whiles those with baccalaureate for their master’s and doctorate degrees. For this to be achieved, Government will have to give incentives to nurses to make continuing education attractive in order to improve quality care and patients safety.
