Future of Children (2004) reports that immigrant families face many challenges, including their children 's having to navigate the complicated process of acculturation from their position of social disadvantage, with minimal language skills and lack of both family and institutional support. Claudia’s family was no different as they struggle with their lack of citizenship and their inadequate language skills. Unique differences are found in families from the same culture, and these differences must be considered in the assessment process. Therefore, in the assessment process for children and families of immigrants, it is important to assess the family from a multi-dimensional cultural perspective (Congress, 2016). The ecomap and genogram are useful tools for assessing immigrant children and their families. The other noteworthy tool is the culturagram, which was developed specifically for working with families from diverse cultures. While the ecomap focuses on the external environments of the families, the genogram is more concerned with the internal relationships between family members. However, despite the fact that the utilization of both of these tools is useful, it does not ensure that cultural differences are considered. This instrument has the potential to identify the strengths and needs of the individuals and/or their families. Within the ecological perspective in social work practice, applying this approach requires the clinician to look at the person and identify and intervene in the transitional process occurring between the various systems.
In the case of Claudia, this perspective enabled the social worker to identify strengths and weaknesses and then develop intervention strategies, such as behavior therapeutic techniques that included relaxation and stress management skills.
