Future Education Reflection Paper

My role as a future education is to make learning come alive for my students. This class has opened up my mind to much more than I thought it would. I had a preconceived notion that a teaching philosophy would not change with time, however, this was one thing I quickly learned to be a misconception of my own. I have written a teaching philosophy before, but I never really understood why exactly I needed to reflect on these things until now. It is because though reflection and inquiry I can grow as an educator. I honestly did not believe that what I had previously reflected on would change, however, I was wrong in more ways that I knew. I have been able to implement some of the practices that I have learned in this class with my field placement students. I now have more confidence in my abilities to make a difference in my future students’ lives. Through the exploration of the materials from the modules, I have a newfound confidence in my own abilities to effectively teach. It was mentioned in the article “Teaching the Science Process Skills” that “Science and teaching students about science means more than scientific knowledge.” Yes, a teacher should have a well-rounded mastery of the content, but it means more than that. Teaching science involves more than just scientific knowledge; it involves the ability to effectively engage students through questioning strategies that further deepen their understanding. In “Learning Science and the Science of Learning” it is mentioned that the Socratic Method states: “knowledge is innate and is called forth by questioning.” I do not necessarily agree that knowledge is innate, but I do agree that learning is done through the process of asking why things occur in the manner in which they do.     There are some challenges to hands on and cross-curricular learning, within our activity we came across some areas that could have been developed, Hayes (2010) argues that hands on learning its heavily resourced. We agreed with this as the amount of resources we had available were limited. We also didn’t ensure we had planned for a child with a medical need, and therefore had to re arrange the activity a quarter of the way through the lesson to ensure she could join in. One key area that we identified was that children became more involved with the way the house looked in a creative sense, rather than the scientific reasoning.
