Texts of many kinds can present readers the opportunity to examine new perspectives and decide how their own beliefs compare. Learning is a multi-faceted issue, so multiple perspectives can be especially for further discovery or solidification of one’s own beliefs. In my reflection journal I will address at least two main points from the weekly reading from Contemporary Theories of Learning (Illeris, 2009), and Emotional Intelligence (Goleman, 2005). In addition, I will include my personal connection and application for each point.
The first point that I would like to address from Contemporary Theories of Learning is the part where the text discusses the effects of the reversal of modernist education. The effects are that the consumer,

This occurs because they are forced to demonstrate knowledge without collaboration or correct context. The effects are that students begin to believe that school is boring and difficult, and that they were not meant for learning. Wenger suggests that we conduct learning in a different way by placing it in the context of experience and participation in in the world. I agree that learning is typically seen as something that is confined to the walls of the classroom, whereas learning should be more open-ended, with many alternative paths. There are some students that learn better by taking tests, but tests are not for every student, and should not be the only option. As a future elementary school teacher, I may not have control over testing, but I can test my students in other ways to discover what they have learned. I will focus on them as unique individuals who have different learning styles and needs. I can give them praise when I witness them excelling in other areas such as public speaking or relating well with other students. These are all other forms of …show more content…
242). He continues by saying that prevention is not a new discovery, but yet I find it interesting that our current medical systems continue to practice treatment, rather than prevention. Doctors continue provide treatment such as anti-depressants or other medications first, rather than taking time to address the real cause. I personally believe that depression is a symptom, but not a cause. The real cause of depression will most likely not be revealed after drug treatment, but rather the cause is masked with that treatment. I believe that the prevention of depression starts by turning to God. For example, in Psalm 42:5-6 (NIV) the sons of Korah state “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” Their remedy for depression started with praising God, and turning their lives over to him. Goleman continues by saying that childhood depression does have an effect on one’s likelihood of having episodes of depression in adulthood. As a future educator, I plan to address this potential problem with my future students by educating them about what depression is, and giving them some alternative solutions. Some ideas include, giving them ideas of who they could go to if they are experiencing depression, and some coping mechanisms. My plan will all depend on what my
