Future Career Goals In Research

Theodore Roosevelt said it best when he stated, “The conservation of natural resources is the fundamental problem. Unless we solve that problem it will avail us little to solve all others.” While my future career goal is to become a registered nurse and has little to do with the environment, I have made many initiatives into the study of conservation and environmental sciences. For the past two years, I have attended Massanutten Regional Governor’s School for Integrated Environmental Science and Technology; there I studied English, Statistics, Calculus, Geology, Agro-Ecology, and Agriculture Policy. Together, we researched and water tested four local ponds and compared to results to determine which body of water would most benefit from to focus on the second year and restore a viable environment for fish and plant life. Brianna Good, my research partner, and I are working with the Luray Caverns and Luray Park Board Association to plant a riparian buffer next to pond at the Singing Tower between the main road, 2-11. In addition, we have plans to beautifying the area with native plants and trees and cleaning the unnecessary contents that contaminate the pond water. The most important environmental issue in my community is the limited knowledge of people’s impact on the environment. For example, many people do not understand the importance of not littering. I have also always grown up in a rural town where if something is broke, you fix it. Many men like to work on their own vehicles, tractors, and/or farm equipment. In this process, it is not unusual for oil spills and other harmful contents to not properly be cleaned. These containments become a part of runoff and eventually end up in waterway systems affecting plant and animal
