During this semester in our Counseling in Rehabilitation Services class, I can honestly say that I have learned a lot. When I first started the class, I thought we were going to have actual therapy sessions and that we would be meeting with an actual counselor. Which I was excited for, but also nervous because I didn’t know what to expect. When I started the class, I was surprised to learn that we would be learning counseling skills and be practicing them ourselves in our own groups. I was excited for this because I know that it somehow benefit me in my future career goals. In my paper, I will be discussing some of the things that I learn through our in-class practice and working within groups for example: about rapport, human relationships, …show more content…
Not only practice the counseling’s skills, but it gave me a real experience. Rapport; is something that I learned is crucial in therapeutic relationship, it’s basically your foundation for a successful session. If your client does not feel comfortable, judge free, or important, then you will not achieve your set goals for them. During your session you have to fully committed to your client, have open ears and really listen to what they are telling you. When we first started our groups I was usually was just the observer, but I noticed that I would just kind of loose focus and not pay attention, even though I wasn’t the counselor, I noticed one time that the client would stop and loos her train of thought just because I wasn’t paying attention. It was such a little detail that really made a huge difference. In our group when we would begin a session we would find it so hard to pick a topic to talk about when we were put in the client position, but when we all discussed why it was so hard in the beginning is because we didn’t really know each other and we weren’t comfortable opening up. So after a couple sessions we found it easier to talk to each other because we all grew a close relationship, built rapport. We talked about our lives outside of school and when our next class session would come before we would start our activity we would talk amongst ourselves about anything interesting news that has happened to us. Which I found out also really helped grow a closer bond between

Thus far, I have learned many important aspects of becoming an effective therapist. One of the major parts of training involves evaluation and feedback from supervisors or peers. I think evaluations are an important part of training because it provides feedback to areas, which you are doing well in, and areas in which you will need improvement. I believe that without evaluations, we as therapist cannot grow into effective therapist. To date I cannot think of any job or career that does not use “end of the year evaluations”.…

Everyone encounters moments in life that can be challenging to manage. Many use adaptive or maladaptive coping mechanisms to handle the situation at hand. Although it is best when the person copes by using problem-solving techniques or an adaptive mechanism, using maladaptive ways is a concern. Moreover, this reflection depicts Mr. Ed 's story, a patient who has diabetes, on how he began to contemplate the changes needed in his lifestyle by experiencing motivational interviewing (MI). What did you learn in this course that will help you to be more effective in your counseling work? I enjoyed working toward a definite goal, working on one day having the promise of having a good job. I looked at different professions and applied at a lot of schools, before finally choosing counseling, during this time I was on vacation and spending a lot of time considering all the options, and how they would impact my life. The work that we did was fun and interesting, I believe I have been frightened of a program being too over whelming, or not engaging me enough to for me to be productive I believed this course helped me balance, my ambitions, and helped me feel productive.…

Personal Reflection I found this project to be tremendously educational as a school counselor in training. I was able to find answers to the questions that I have wanted to know ever since I decided to pursue this line of work and complete this project feeling more confident than when I began it. One topic that the City High counselor and I talked about that was directly relatable to me was the fact that he received his Master’s degree in School Counseling at Arizona State and was easily able to transfer his license to Illinois.…

I relate more with the Sigmund Freud theory. I think we all have desire and impulses that flow through us every day. Some thoughts that we have consciously and unconsciously happen throughout the day. I believe that what separates just a thought or minor feelings from a problem that needs to become controlled are actions. I think most individuals choose to act or not act on their feelings.…

To start off this week’s reflection piece, despite continuing to have some lingering feelings of un-comfort and/or uneasiness alike to last week’s session, especially prior to and during the early beginnings of the counselling session, for similar reasons. However, if one were to ask me to describe session and/or recount the session, emotions and feelings such as confidence, and satisfaction, would be the descriptive words that come to mind. One of the reasons for this I believe, is the emergence of the client’s overall engagement, as well as involvement with regards to goal setting, towards the midst and ending of the session, where such seemed to be minimal or non-existent upon the beginning of the session. For instance, one of the earlier…

Introduction If you were to tell a person that you are currently in master’s program for rehabilitation counseling, the main response that you would get is the following statement, “Oh that’s nice, what is that?” Compared to other professions rehabilitation counseling is not as well know, even to the undergraduate student in the college that offers the program. It is surprising to come to this realization considering that rehabilitation counselors offer many services and the profession itself has numerous job opportunities. Just as there are strengths and opportunities, there are also weaknesses and threats in the profession.…

After completing the final counselling video for this class, there was a great sense of relief. Looking at the first video and comparing it to the last one, there was improvement. Beginning with my first video I was quite nervous and did not feel like I was equipped to properly assist my client. An item that really stood out to me in my first session was that I asked questions that did not give my client much opportunity to speak. As the counsellor I felt I had to keep speaking because awkward silence was a sign that I was not doing my job properly.…
