In this desolate apocalyptic world women serve only two purposes in the world of Mad Max: Fury Road— reproduce and produce milk— and if you could not meet those requirements you were worthless in the fierce warlord Immortal Joe’s eyes. Thus, Furiosa, a woman unable to have children makes it her goal to smuggle imprisoned wives from Citadel. Throughout the movie Furiosa makes hard decisions as well as she ends up affecting those around her that makes her a heroine. In a society where men tend to make most of the important decisions, Fury Road takes it into a different way. Furiosa

Superhero Comic Books Berlatsky’s article, “The Female Thor and the Female Comic-Book Reader” (2014), argues that girls are interested in reading superhero comics as much as boys; there has been a lot of speculation whether comic books were created to entertain only the masculine audience. In order to stop the sexism that has been going around in the superhero comic book industry, Berlatsky uses the logos Aristotelian appeal to inform the comic book audience that girls have been a fan of comics since decades ago. He also managed in using the hyperbole and aphorism rhetorical strategies to show that boys see girls differently and don’t belong in this industry. As a matter of fact, Berlatsky uses aphorism in one of the first paragraphs.…

In contrast to Offred, Furiosa does not accept her patriarchy’s rule. Immortan Joe’s rule does not necessarily oppress women as a whole like the Republic of Gilead. Most of the people under his rule are peasant men and women. These peasants, while treated horribly through Immortan Joe’s inhumane control of the freshwater supply, seem to be treated equally. However, Immortan Joe does treat his five wives as property.…

The last time Disney and Greco-Roman mythology met was with 1997 's horribly inaccurate, yet still charming Hercules. The film underperformed at the box office and was panned by Greek press. Disney and Greco-Roman mythology haven 't mixed since, probably at least partly because the dark subject matter of many Greco-Roman myths simply isn 't suited for a movie aimed at young children. However, many of the western fairy tales used as source material for Disney films share shocking similarities to classical myths. Like Pandora and her box, Snow White 's own curiosity lands her in a coma by means of poison apple, but while Pandora has to live with herself after releasing a whole gaggle of awful things unto man, Snow White is rescued by her…

I found that Mad Max: Fury Road had many elements of feminism throughout the film. The movie focuses on women escaping and fighting for their freedom from a patriarchal society. It portrays women very differently than many films and it’s a great representation of what women are truly capable of. The first moment that I noticed a form of feminism was with the appearance of Furiosa. She has a completely shaved head, scars, only one arm and is wearing some sort of a war uniform.…

Although of different mediums, there are many connections that can be made between Mad Max: Fury Road, and Les Guerilleres by Monique Wittig. They portray different views of feminism, but are both considered to be very feminist stories. Les Guerillere’s portrayal of feminism shows a view of female supremacy, and shows that women are not only equal to men, but in many ways better. Mad Max shows men, and women are in a way equal. They cast women in roles that men would typically be cast in.…

Aeschylus’s trilogy The Oresteia is a play of immense proportions, and at its heart it is a study of morality and the palpable tension of the competing ideas of dikē – justice or right. It depicts a societal change from one form of justice and law to another; from the law of the old gods to the law of the new. The third play in the trilogy, The Eumenides, depicts the culmination of this conflict, where all the individual conflicts reach their conclusions and the overarching themes of the trilogy come to their dénouement.…

For years the spotlight has been on the men of the film industry, but even back in the silent era women filmmakers were creating impressive pieces of art that surpassed many of the more “important” male directed movies. From Lois Weber’s Suspense (1913) to Ida Lupino’s Not Wanted (1949) female directors have made films that focus on women and the unexpected plights that life brings. While watching these two films it’s interesting to see how the men are portrayed, which includes the male characters that are selfish, the ones that are saviors and the ones that represent the law. By examining these three different representations we can discover how the male characters affect the stories of these two films.…

Gender, Violence, and Family in Man of Steel In the film, Man of Steel, portrayals of violence have a direct correlation to gender. According to Abele and Gronbeck-Tedesco (2015), “female characters are often exploited to highlight violence in Superhero films” (p. 84). Most superhero films use the notion of the female gender role to highlight the violent actions of male lead characters (Abele & Gronbeck-Tedesco, 2015, p. 84).
