The book It’s Kind of a Funny story touches on a serious topic, spreading light on the realness of depression. Still, it is very uplifting. This book shows the immense struggles that one is able to power through. Even though individuals contain such strength, assistance can be beneficial and isn’t something to be ashamed of. A theme of It’s Kind of a Funny Story could be that independently you can accomplish so much, but the relationships you have formed can guide you and be a rock for you through your struggles. This theme is portrayed through many events throughout the book, including Aaron’s friendship from the very beginning, Bobby showing Craig that he can relate with others and build relationships off of that, and his intellectual relationship …show more content…
He found he could rely on her to help him with his hard times. Craig met Noelle in the psychiatric hospital like he had met Bobby. She and Craig connected on an intellectual level. She too could understand Craig. Noelle had many struggles in her life and ended up cutting her own face. Those scars were there for the whole world to see and to Craig he saw a brave girl that anybody could go talk to, because she would be there to understand them. Noelle is also the reason Craig discovered his talents in art. She suggested him to draw something from his childhood. This sparked his memory and love for drawing maps, only this time his maps got more intricate, taking the form of a brain. “Thanks for getting me started. I owe you big” Craig had told her (Vizzini 369). Noelle’s friendship with Craig offered him someone to talk to and also helped him find his own talents that could carry him far in life.
Independently you can accomplish so much, but the relationships you have formed can guide you and be a rock for you through your struggles is a theme that is prevalent throughout It’s Kind of a Funny Story.
